Video Poker tournament

I am for the first time signed up for a Video Poker Tournament at Planet Hollywood later this month and was wondering if anyone can give me an idea what to expect as I have no clue.

What game is usually played, what’s the best strategy, is it based on speed or number of hands, etc .etc.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I played a VP tournament at PH about a year ago and the game was DDB (9/6 or 10/6, I don’t recall) and the rounds were 10 or 15 minutes with unlimited hands. I advise playing fast and going for the high-value hands. You won’t win a tournament going for inside straights. Hold your Ace(s) and anything that might become a Royal. Don’t sweat the small stuff and hope for good deals. In short sessions, you are really at the mercy of the (pseudo)RNG. If you are driving, leave extra time to navigate the parking garage so you don’t miss your session!

These can vary quite a bit…I’ve played quite a few tourneys, and the games vary. Often the pay tables are different from what you would normally see.

Not all of them are timed, but most are, so it usually pays to get in as many hands as possible. Some have “pool” of credits that you must use or lose, and I always want to get in every possible play!

The math gurus may be able to give you better play strategy, but I always go for the best payoff in the short term…not necessarily the best long term strategy. For instance, I might hold A-10 suited, or hold a pair of face cards and drop a second pair, etc.

Ultimately, you might not see the game details with enough advance time to really prepare much. I always avoid the early rounds, so that I can watch others and get a few minutes to study the pay table, as well as the machine’s mechanical functioning.

No doubt there are better experts than me in this group, so perhaps one of them has advice that is more mathematically sound. Good luck!

Although video poker is generally designed to be drawing to high
paying hands, anyway, when things get desperate in a tournament,
strategy can get crazy. Towards the end, with a poor score, it can
become obvious that a low pair is better than 2 pair and perhaps a ten
by itself is better than an open ended straight draw.

In my experience with slot tournaments at Caesar owned establishments, you will play a regular slot machine for 10 minutes as fast as you can for either 2 or sometimes 3 sessions. Top scores win free play. Unless it is a video poker tournament then you will be playing vp. Good luck!
