Video Poker Tournament Strategies

When I came in first place in a VP tournament, it was the kind in which you
play as fast as you can (not a set number of hands). There were SEVEN
royals during the tournament. Some of the players who hit royals were not
VP players and played very slowly. I am a fast player and that gave me a
slight edge. However, I still only won by less than 100 points.

When I placed second in a VP tournament, it was a set number of hands. If I
had 20 more points, I would have won first place and twice as much money.

In another VP tournament, with a set number of hands, my first two session
scores totaled less than most everyone else got in one session. But, my
third session was so fantastic that I tied for second place. If I had 5
more points (in any of the sessions), I would have been second place -
without having to split the (2nd & 3rd place) prizes.

FWIW, depending on the tournament (and the payout schedules), I alter my
strategy to go for the royals more aggressively. But, not so aggressive
that I throw away points.

Just from my own personal experience, I would never throw away 125 points to
go for a royal. Those points are more valuable to me than the chance that
this one hand would give me the royal.

I agree, Harry. I will find it very interesting to hear the strategies of
the winners, too.

My 2+ cents take on this. However the tournament is approached, lets
hear from some winners come May!

I pulled in a $25,000 first place in slot tournament. I took first
place by 100 points in a two session free tournament. One play might
have made a difference. Playing as fast as possible is important in
both slot and vp slot tournaments.

I walked around Skyline Casino on Boulder Hwy yesterday and couldn't find any machines with $1 10/7DB. All $1 machines and bartops were shorted to 9/7. I did find (3) .50 machines with 10/7DB at the smaller back bar.

There were also (4) uprights with a linked $1 progressive that contained full-pay NSU and JOB. The meter was around $5200 at the time.
