With all due respect to Albert, he has not been a subscriber to
Video Poker Player for a couple of years, so he has no current
basis
on which to appraise Video Poker Player. It's not your father's
VPP
(or your momma's, either).
However, to assert that Strictly Slots (again with all due
respect) is a better publication for smart VP players (which is
what
we have here) than VPP is more than a little off the wall. I'm not
saying that SS is a bad publication, after all I write a couple of
columns for it every month. And I do agree that Bob's inside
information from IGT on their latest "gimmick" games, makes for
some
cool articles about what are occasionally viable games (Multi
Strike
really stands out, for example), but more often are not playable
in
any version that can be found (Double Pay Poker, Trade Up Poker,
Double Down Stud, Austin Powers), so that that amounts to at best
about one useful article a year whcih can sometimes subsequently
be
found on IGT's web site. And these are articles which basically
are
there to promote IGT's latest games, which brings me to the basic
difference (besides the fact that Video Poker Player is for video
poker players). Strictly Slots is supported by advertising from
casinos and game manufacturers. Actually, I don't think ads from
manufacturers are a problem, but there can bee a real problem if
you
want to write anything that might offend a casino advertiser.
This
is to be expected of course, casino ads are the lifeblood of SS
and
Casino Player and virtually any big-time gambling publication.
This
is not a problem with Video Poker Player (or Video Poker Times for
that matter) and never will be. We don't go out of our way to bash
casinos but anyone who knows us, knows that we tell the truth
about
them, good or bad.
A much more sensible comparison is with Dan Paymar's Video Poker
Times, an excellent publication that has been around for a long
time. I think it's well worth the money, even if it does costs a
lot
more than VPP and is only published bimonthly (heh, heh, heh - I
know Dan will have something to say about this). The focus is
different and there are more technical articles in VPT (although I
guess that over a year both newsletters have close to the same
number of strategy and technical articles), while at VPP we have a
lot about where to play and where to stay, VPP news, and humor.
Lots
of humor. In fact the whole idea when we first started VPP was
that
we wanted it to be fun and entertaining, not just another boring
rehash of stuff you have read half a dozen times. That hasn't
changed.
But I think you should be able to decide for yourself about Video
Poker Player and I will have a couple of free issues, and (if you
like what you see) a special price for VPFREE members and I will
post that information here over the weekend, if it's OK with Tom.
Thanks,
Skip
