This is turning into a monster e-zine - is that what they call magazines online? VERY valuable information. And it is only $35 a year (not $55). For $45 more (total of $80), you get the whole "ball of wax" - access to everything on the Web site and Video Poker Player mag.

I was going to make a very nasty comment about this blatant advertising about another VP site, but decided it was not worth the effort. Some of us remember when that site was free, or later for a MUCH lower price. Sales and members must be lagging. The fact that we can get the same basic, and sometimes better/faster information here, must be hurting sales. If I never see another picture of Fluffy, it will be too soon.

<<I was going to make a very nasty comment about this blatant advertising

Whenever I find useful information for VP players, whether it is free or has a cost, I share it on several of the lists I belong to. There are many Web sites about gambling and Vegas and many of them overlap and duplicate information on general subjects and specific games. I don't see this as a negative - or even competition. The more input I have from different sources, the smarter I can play.

It is fine to have your personal opinion about whether one Web site fits your needs better than another - and we all have to make decisions depending on how much time we have to explore the resources available. However, on this list, the administrator has said that he does not ban talk about "commercial" products if they are resources that might be of help to VP players.

I am sure that slamming another site is NOT acceptable on this list and is considered, by most members here, rude and totally uncalled for . And it IS worth my effort to say so!

I was going to make a very nasty comment about this blatant

advertising

about another VP site, but decided it was not worth the effort.

Well thanks, Bob! (I think)
I had no idea that those messages would be posted here. But they
were obviously the result of genuine enthusiam on the part
of two people who have no financial interest in VPP. True, Misscraps
writes for VPP and is proud of her contributions and deservedly so.
Jean hasn't written an article for us for years (although she's
certainly welcome (hint, hint).

Second, although some parts of vphomepage were free at one time, so
what? Do you work for free, Bob? Most people don't and I can't afford
to. Wish I could but I can't. Video Poker Player of course, was never
free, and in fact was the same price 5 years ago when it was 4 pages,
as it is now at 18 pages.

I am away from home right now and won't be able to do much until
Sunday at least, but I will follow up on Misscrap's suggestion about
a free issue, subject to Tom's approval. I'm sure many people will
enjoy it, but don't worry, Bob, no one will force you to look at
Fluffy.

Thanks,
Skip

I couldn't help but notice that your name is followed by the name of
your business, and your Yahoo ID is "rarecoinexpert". So much for
your disgust for "blatant advertising". You apparently only object
to others doing it.

Well most people I know don't look up Yahoo id's. I have never been
paranoid enough to think it necessary. I also don't have a paragraph
about selling my wares after my signature. And as I recall, I have
never advertised coins in a post to this forum or even talked about
them. Congratulations, you are the first!

Just to add another opinion....
I used to subscribe to VPP. I dropped my subscription because I found very little new or useful information therein.
If you must have all published VP information then go ahead and get it.
If I were to make a list of where people should spend their money on publications/software, it would be headed by

1. Video Poker software - Either Frugal VP, or BDPWP and VP Strategy master .
2. Las Vegas Advisor .
These are the MUST Haves .

3. Strictly Slots - sometimes have good revues on new VP games.
4. VPP
5. Any number of books that rehash what is created by the software in number 1.

I'll add my 2 cents as well, expanding this list and adding my own
comments:

1. Frugal VP (fvp) -- when it comes down to it, the more practical and
complete of available software.

2a. WinPoker (BDPW) -- Still a fave when it comes to ease of use and
graphics.
2b. VP Strategy Master (vpsm) -- A necessary compliment to BDPW;
prepares strategy charts. (fvp handles the function of both "2" items)

3. Strictly Slots (mag) -- AP's nailed it, useful reviews on several
VP fronts.

4a. Video Poker - Optimum Play, Dan Paymar (book) -- an excellent
primer for those looking to get their hands around the key aspects of
vp play. Presents the basic technicalities of the game in a manner
the most can grasp.

4b. More Frugal Gambling, Jean Scott (book) -- The sequel to Jean's
Frugal Gambler, this book is packed full of "everything you wanted to
know about gambling, but were afraid to ask", and has a keen vp
orientation. The original Frugal Gambler is worth a read but if
you're new to both I recommend you skip to the good stuff here.

Newsletters:
5a. Video Poker Player (VPP), Skip Hughes
5b. Video Poker Times, Dan Paymer

These are hardly interchangable newsletters and have distinctly
different focuses. Both are excellent supplemental resources to the
player.

VPP (monthly) has an excellent smattering of game discussion, casino
opportunities in several venues, technical analysis, and as Bob
alluded, an occasional Fluffy appearance

VP Times (bimonthly) also brings diverse content, much of which
carries harder technical content.

6. Million Dollar Video Poker, Bob Dancer (book) -- It's not likely
to make a world of difference in your vp play, but it yields one of
the best insights into casino gambling. Beside, it's loaded with
several wonderful tales.

- Harry

With all due respect to Albert, he has not been a subscriber to
Video Poker Player for a couple of years, so he has no current basis
on which to appraise Video Poker Player. It's not your father's VPP
(or your momma's, either).

However, to assert that Strictly Slots (again with all due
respect) is a better publication for smart VP players (which is what
we have here) than VPP is more than a little off the wall. I'm not
saying that SS is a bad publication, after all I write a couple of
columns for it every month. And I do agree that Bob's inside
information from IGT on their latest "gimmick" games, makes for some
cool articles about what are occasionally viable games (Multi Strike
really stands out, for example), but more often are not playable in
any version that can be found (Double Pay Poker, Trade Up Poker,
Double Down Stud, Austin Powers), so that that amounts to at best
about one useful article a year whcih can sometimes subsequently be
found on IGT's web site. And these are articles which basically are
there to promote IGT's latest games, which brings me to the basic
difference (besides the fact that Video Poker Player is for video
poker players). Strictly Slots is supported by advertising from
casinos and game manufacturers. Actually, I don't think ads from
manufacturers are a problem, but there can bee a real problem if you
want to write anything that might offend a casino advertiser. This
is to be expected of course, casino ads are the lifeblood of SS and
Casino Player and virtually any big-time gambling publication. This
is not a problem with Video Poker Player (or Video Poker Times for
that matter) and never will be. We don't go out of our way to bash
casinos but anyone who knows us, knows that we tell the truth about
them, good or bad.

A much more sensible comparison is with Dan Paymar's Video Poker
Times, an excellent publication that has been around for a long
time. I think it's well worth the money, even if it does costs a lot
more than VPP and is only published bimonthly (heh, heh, heh - I
know Dan will have something to say about this). The focus is
different and there are more technical articles in VPT (although I
guess that over a year both newsletters have close to the same
number of strategy and technical articles), while at VPP we have a
lot about where to play and where to stay, VPP news, and humor. Lots
of humor. In fact the whole idea when we first started VPP was that
we wanted it to be fun and entertaining, not just another boring
rehash of stuff you have read half a dozen times. That hasn't
changed.

But I think you should be able to decide for yourself about Video
Poker Player and I will have a couple of free issues, and (if you
like what you see) a special price for VPFREE members and I will
post that information here over the weekend, if it's OK with Tom.
Thanks,
Skip

Tom;
You might not have noticed this note, as I have been accidentally
sending out notes with the handle ADOBE. I would say don't ask, but
it's not real mysterious. I needed to reinstall Acrobat 6.0 that I
use to create VPP and other stuff and had to call their support
number to get a pass code. I wanted to save it as an email and be
able to look it up easily, so I set my ID to ADOBE to send myself a
note with the passcode. Forgot to set it back, of course. I deny
that this has anything to do with getting old. I've always been this
way<g>.

Anyway, I plan to set up a page where VPFREE members can download a
couple of the recent issues of VPP for free and get a reduced
subscription rate if they wish. Let me know if this is OK.
Thanks,
Skip
