Venetian/Strip comps

I used to be a Harrah's Diamond member but stopped playing there when they trashed the VP and let everything else go downhill. For the past few years when I've stayed on the Strip I've gone to Venetian/Palazzo where I've either gotten comped rooms or decent deals ($129 a night plus food/show/slot credits). But the rumors of their eliminating comps other than to the high-rollers seem to be true. When I asked about rooms for June, I was quoted the same rate I could get thru any site online. And they said to be comped, it would take 4-6 hours of $2 VP or $250 average bet at the tables. If they had decent VP I might be able handle that, but not with the games they offer.

I'll see if I get an e-mail offer for June, but otherwise we'll be shopping around for the Strip part of our visit. Any ideas on other places on the Strip? I remember Wynn being very tight. What about the MGM properties these days?

It's not just a rumor. Adelson himself bragged about eliminating comps for low level players on their last quarterly conference call.

MGM put me in a higher tier in their newly rebranded players' club than I thought my play warranted, and a few others have mentioned the same thing. I think right now they're hungrier than the other big operators on the strip. Cosmo is another possibility, although I think the lowest denomination that they have playable VP is $5.

Harrah's may have crappy Video poker, but for VERY limited play you get free rooms... LOTS of them. Might be worth it. If you are willing to pay over $100 a night, for a room, you could play a little at Harrahs, lose less than the price of that "free" room. Of course there is always the possibility you could get lucky at 7/5 bonus poker. It has been known to happen.

There are Harrah's all over the country, and one in Canada. THe VP is bad, but the rooms are great!

Playing Short Pay VP would be prepayment for "unknown" comps. I think it would be a part time job to exploit Harrahs comp system to break even(at best).

I think this statement he posted says he's not happy with the rooms at Harrah's properties and is looking for something a bit more high end.

Exactly. I liked staying at Caesars and Paris was OK, but not a big fan of Harrah's, Flamingo or Bally's. And I just felt like the customer service in general went way downhill at those casinos - things like cutting back/closing the Diamond lounges. Having so many other locations (some with decent VP!) around the country is a plus, but realistically I never get to vist those anyway. So I'm not too interested in rekindling my relationship with Harrah's at this point.

Thanks Mike for the info on MGM. Do you (or anyone else) know if the room comp "credit" you earn is pretty much good for all of their casinos or only where you play? Like at harrah's, at least when it came to rooms, I could get free rooms just about anywhere based on my play at 1 or 2 casinos. Just wondering if I can play at any MGM casino to try to get some offers to all of them, or whether I need to play where I want to stay.

Steve,

MGM's players club has gotten a lot more structured, more like TR for better or worse. What they call "express comps" can be used at any outlet that accepts them. You'll get offers from all of their LV properties (except Circus I think) that will obviously vary by property.

Last time we were in Vegas we stayed at M'Bay, I played VP at Luxor, and we played live poker at MGM Grand. Within a week of getting home I was getting mailings from Luxor, so apparently concentrating your play at one place will get you some mail at least. I don't know how much discretion hosts have to hand out comps, which is the main reason I can think of to play where you stay.
