Vegas Trip Report: The Tale of the Low Stakes Royal Flushes

I thought I'd write up quick trip report from my latest Vegas outing with
the Dear Wife (DW) this past weekend. First, some notes:
1 - I am "in between" jobs right now (thanks Obama!) so I am playing very,
very low stakes.
2 - I am new to VP (JoB) but certainly not new to Advantage Play (been doing
that for years). So I still make the occasional mistake but am quickly
learning. I mostly use the strategy cards from the Wizard of Odds. This was
my first trip where VP was my main form of AP
3 - I know some of you are going to just plain cry when you read about my
Royals. But remember, you were once new too and sometimes you just have to
play some low stakes to get your feet wet with AP

*FRIDAY:*
DW likes to drive fast so we managed to roll into town a lot sooner than we
expected. As we were coming in I mentioned to her how I had heard that the M
Resort was very nice and we decided that it would be fun to stop in. It was
a lot more beautiful than I anticipated and I thought it was a really
comfortable atmosphere. I was playing a 100-play $0.01machine and had some
decent success with it. I was having trouble with some obscure choices
(small pair or two high-suited?) but was doing OK because I was only playing
50 hands at 1 unit. I managed to draw four to the RF and pulled a RF on two
hands. WooHoo! My first real Royals . . . all at the whopping rate of $2.50
each  Its not about the money for me at this point, it's more about coming
along my learning curve with VP and I was very happy with this result

We checked into our usual hotel (the Wynn) and were once again pleased with
the room. We had a nice view of the golf course and the pool areas. I
actually enjoy this view more than the Strip views we've had in the past
because the Strip is getting much too crowded and the City Center buildings
look like . . . well . . . crap. We enjoy Wynn but I gotta say that I feel
like the level of service has gone down a notch or two there recently.

Fast forward to dinner time with DW and her father. We had (huge!) steaks at
Gallaghers at NYNY and had a great time! The service was fairly decent and
the atmosphere was your traditional steakhouse. But, unlike other places,
they do not charge for refills on Diet Coke and DW & I appreciated that
because it's such a low-class move to do otherwise (Luxor Steak and Smith &
Wollensky . . . I'm looking in your general direction).

We decided to play at NYNY for a little bit. My DW just loves the slots and
she went off to play the "Deal or No Deal" slot that was just about "due"
(bless her heart!) . I found a JoB machine with a horrible pay schedule but
decided to play a bit because I knew we wouldn't be long. It was $0.25 and I
was only comfortable with 1 coin in. Sure enough, about 10 hands in I
flopped two high-suited and drew for the Royal . . . woohoo! Yes, I know I
missed out on a $1000 pay out but you gotta play to your roll

*SATURDAY:*
A good portion of the day was spent sleeping and getting ready to watch DW's
dad in a bowling tournament. We only had a brief playing period where I drew
another Royal at Wynn on the 100-play $0.01 machine and even DW got a Royal
on her DDB (I think). She doesn't do AP play, she just holds what feels
right

*SUNDAY:*
The VP Gods Giveth and the VP Gods Taketh. I had two sessions that did
nothing but start ugly and get even uglier. I managed to lose a good portion
of my daily roll in about 90 minutes total. At this point, I was a little
burned out on VP so I played some advantage BJ (old habits die hard) and
made a nice little score to end my trip up (VP play was slightly up).

Overall a good experience for VP but I do need to work on my BR for more
consistent play

I completely misunderstood the subject of your post. I had assumed you were going to describe something similar to what happened to me on a bad trip last year. Royals at low denoms, ugly losses at higher.

Basically, I had a bad losing trip despite hitting three 25c royals for $3000. And the reason the trip was a net loss was due to unlucky losing sessions when I played at higher denominations.

As for your experience, I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. But if you delete the 4000/5 payoff for the royal and instead insert 250/1 in estimating expected return you will find that you have no chance of winning as a serious player. Your admission of being "comfortable" at playing one coin suggests you'll have to seriously consider whether you are playing for entertainment or actually want to play with a fighting chance of making a profit. Find the best payback machines and play max coins every hand. You can't ever bankroll properly shortpaying yourself on royals like you did this trip. Good luck.
