Long time lurker, first time poster...

Wife and I are planning on going to Vegas for the first time this
summer for about three days, and had some questions...

We're looking at various places to stay, and have narrowed it down to
these three: The Stratosphere, The Orleans, and Four queens. We
don't want to spend more than $120 on lodgings (not including taxes
etc.) How are these three? Any others you'd rec over these three?

I love Craps and Blackjack, and am a beginner at -- although taking a
shine to -- video poker. Is there any one casino in town that can
handle a couple who enjoy all three, with decent house rules / odds,
FPVP, with a limited bankroll?

How about airfare. Who generally has the best deals? We want to keep
it as cheap as possible, without layovers.

Any advice would be helpful.

Is that $120 per night or total?

I would recommend Sam's Town and use their free shuttle buses to visit
the strip and the downtown area.
The cheapest nights are Sun - Thur.

ST should fit your needs for accommodations, food, and gambling on the
cheap.

www.swavacations.com has some great deals if you are in a city that
they service. Good packages with air / hotel / car (optional).
Travelaxe is pretty good for hotels, you can download it at
www.lasvegasadvisor.com. As far as airfare is concerned, I have the
best luck with www.sidestep.com/home.html the download lets you
search with many different parameters. Quick with DSL or Broadband.
I agree with Dennis about Sam's Town and their shuttles (if you
don't rent a car or if you do). Good luck and have fun.

I'm one of those too. So hello to you and everyone!

For what it's worth, my hubby and I (or sometimes just a girlfriend and I) who live in St. Louis, have visited Vegas 55
times in the past, most recently about a month ago, which necessitates doing it on a budget. We've stayed at almost every hotel downtown (including the much-maligned Cortez) and a few on and off the strip. Since, except for sleeping, we never spend more than a half hour in the morning and a half hour at night in our rooms, they're quite immaterial to us. (Needless to say, we're 'older' folks and don't go to Vegas for the romance, but for the VP machines!) Anyhow, in my opinion, The 4 Queens is great and within steps of many other casinos. The Strat is kind of isolated --but not prohibitively so --because renting a car instead of spending our gambling stash on a fancy room is the way we do Vegas nowadays. It makes us totally mobile and enables us to visit all the outlying casinos where so much of the full-pay stuff is. We also play some blackjack which often gets us food comps when we ask. And we utilize every coupon we can get.

Hey, have fun! You don't have to spend big bucks to enjoy Vegas. At least, WE never have.

For the first time tourist I usually recommend staying on the Strip or
downtown. If you're like most you'll be doing a lot of sightseeing and
slack jawed gaping and this can be done more conveniently from the two main
tourist areas, though the Orleans offers a convenient and free shuttle to
center Strip. If you're interested in the Strip, the Orleans might be your
best choice of the three, and obviously 4Qs if you're interested in
downtown.

Gambling on a budget: Downtown has the largest assortment of good options
for the lowroller all in one compact location, IMO.

Cheap airfare: Each market is different. Presuming you are departing
Chicago (as you recently posted on the Chicago group) American, America West
and Southwest can be competitive and all offer direct nonstop flights.
Spirit can be cheap, but beyond that I wouldn't recommend it.

You might want to check out sites like LVA and Cheapo Vegas as well as
forums like Las Vegas Talk. Have fun!
