I ran this paytable on winpoker: RF-8000,sf-250,4 aces-800, 4-2,3,4's 400, 4 5-K-250, FH-45, Fl-30, Straight 25, 3 of Kind-15. two pair/job-5. I came up with a payback about 100%, but the varience clocks in at about 92%. This seem awfully high, did I miss something? Many thanks...

When you double the size of the Royal flush which is a rare hand, you really do crank up the variance. The more that the rare hands increase in value the higher the variance.

Just asking, because I know you know more than I. Doesn't the frequent hands have to return less also to increase the variance?

Some quick feedback: I can understand where a "gut" level feel for variance might lead you to this statement, but it's wrong.
VP variance measures the difference between the payout of various wins vs the average expected payout/hand (which tends to approximate 1 bet). As such, variance will generally be increased with a payout bump for any given hand, and decreased should a payout be reduced.
btw, the paytable vprod asks about was a former favorite at Harrah's AC (referred to as "Double Bonus/Double Jackpot") and found on certain Bally Gamemakers. Those machines had auto-hold as an optional feature; the strategy had just a few flaws, permitting fast play/correction. Unfortunately, long since removed.

As Harry pointed out, decreasing any pay will decrease variance. But
maybe you're assuming that the overall payback will remain the same,
in which case there's some truth to your question. For a higher pay
to increase the variance without changing the overall payback, the
frequent hands have to return less.
Nothing wrong. The very high royal on this game which was (may still be) one of the best in Atlantic City (100.07%) causes the variance. Needless to say, if you are under-royaled on this you will not like it!
