Personally, I keep 3 cards to a royal 100% of the time and have ever since
the other 3 cards to royal showed up after I held a high pair on a $5 machine
8 years ago. (sigh.....)
I'm not a local, but go to Vegas 4-5 times a year to play VP. I've had as
many as 7 royals in one 4 day week-end. On a different weekend, I started out
one day hitting a royal at 8 AM. Took my afternoon break and came back to the
same machine and proceeded to get 3 separate royals within 2 hours and 20
minutes. Not all of them were holding 3 cards, one was all 5 cards on the
re-draw.
I guess that's why they call it "gambling" and not "arithmetic". If you don't
go for the "gamble" there's no chance in hitting it.
