Ultimate X play

Okay,

I freely admit that if I am in a casino that has Ultimate X, I will give the machine a quick check to see if there are any multipliers. If there are a bunch of machines with many games on each, I will usually just check the double double bonus since that is where I’ve found most of the multipliers.

I was at a local casino and saw another UXer find a $0.50 5 play machine with a 2x multiplier on line 4. He sat down, looked at the rest of the games ( nothing else of interest) and then made a cell phone call. Another person came over, took his seat and then made a cell phone call. Finally she put some money in and played the game. One coin per line. I think the base game was double double bonus and even assuming it was a 9/6 paytable, his find is worth ( .97 * 6)/5 * $2.50 or about $0.41. There were 3 people involved and it took them about 10 minutes from finding the play to actually playing it.

Now, I understand 1 coin vs 5 coins on UX but I don’t understand why they played 5 coins total instead of 4. 4 coins would have still gotten the multiplier and your profit would be ( .97 * 5)/4 * $2.00 or $0.42. You would make more and risk less.

Times must be very tough in the hustling community to play this single coin. Even with 5 coins, the play is only worth ( 0.99 *6)/5 * $12.50 or $2.35. That sure seems like an awful lot to give up by only playing 1 coin per hand. I should have bought the play off of them for $0.50.

The casino that I frequent, way too often, gets a lot of play on the 4 or 5 Ultimate X machines they have. I know nothing about the game and would like to learn. Getting very tired of the NSU’S. I would appreciate any advise I can get. Most of the people I see playing the game are $.50/ 10 play.

They probably lost too much of their bankroll (incorrectly) wonging one cent Alice in Wonderland slots. The phone calls were your first clue they were brain dead.

They’re probably regular slot players, many of which can be beat by playing one coin instead of max. The ones that can be beat are the ones where you can hit a progressive or bonus on min bet. Lund’s “Robbing the One Armed Bandits” tells you all about it.

Do such things even still exist?

Machines that allow you to hit a progressive or banked bonus on min bet? They can be found on practically any casino floor. Many of the new slots work this way. Probably design oversights, the machines may not get tested at min bet and casinos may assume that min-bettors can’t beat them.

Many video slots work that way. Similar to the “Stations” progressive bonus system.

Since a randomly preselected “coin in” point triggers these, the more you bet, the more likely you will trigger it.

EV for these type of machines does not usually change based on bet level.

This group has discussed this situation a few months ago as it applies to the Aristocrat slots “major” and “minor” jackpots to determine when you should attack these.

Without going into the math, at one of the casinos I monitor for Vpfree, the “major” contributes 0.375% EV and “minor” 0.75% EV no matter what your bet level. (Very low compared to LV versions.)

Since I estimate that the base game is only 86% EV, the casino has certainly not
made an error by having these.

People sometimes leave +EV slots at no-lose "Xmas present" levels (when it doesn't matter if you min-bet or max-bet); e.g.

9.97 on "hit by $10" ($75 for $1 meter)
19.90 on "hit by $20" ($200 meter)
49.94 on "hit by $50" ($125 meter)
499.88 on "hit by $500" ($400 meter)
