Tunica Offer

Hi Gang:
Hedy and I received a free junket offer today for a trip to Tunica in
January. It includes free airfare from Newark to Memphis, shuttle service from
Memphis to one of three hotels and a three-night stay. The hotel choices are the
Horseshoe, Grand Casino or Sheraton.
We're hoping to get some feedback from the groups about the three hotels.
We've never been to Tunica but have talked about going there and doing some
sightseeing in Memphis during our stay.
Any info on the quality of the hotels, VP inventory, restaurants etc. would
be greatly appreciated. I checked out the vpFREE database for VP but I'm not
sure how up to date it is. So, if anyone has been in Tunica recently and can
offer some opinions we would be very thankful.
Regards,
CoachVee (Tom V) & Hedy

I was talking to a friend who went on a free trip to Tunica and said she'd never go back. That was only because the hotel was not connected to the casino and she had to be shuttled to and from the casino. When she travels alone, she wants to be in the same hotel as casino. Check and see if one of these hotels is connected to the casino if that is important to you. She also said the Grand is very nice. I also get many offers for free trips and have taken four since March. We are always treated very well. Lake Tahoe is a favorite.

Coach

I would recommending staying at the Horseshoe and playing at Sheraton.
They are about 10 yards apart. Horseshoe rooms are nice and they
have an excellent diamond lounge. Nothing to play there. Sheraton
has 2P Jokers, 9/6 JOB, NSUD, Triple Deuces all upstairs plus .16%
cash back from 25c to $5. Best restaurants are at Horseshoe. Also
you can walk to Gold Strike (about 20 yards) which also has good games
(9/6 JOB, Super Aces, 2P Jokers) in 25c to $5.

Grand has three hotels but the only one connected to the casino is
pretty average. The other two are very nice but you need a shuttle to
get to the casino (it would be about a difficult 10 minute walk).
Grand has 9/6 JOB and the restaurants aren't too bad. There is a
shuttle which links all three Harrahs properties.

Good Luck.

I've been to Tunica a few times and enjoy it quite a bit. It's a shorter
trip for us (and therefore cheaper). Our last trip was primarily a
blackjack trip so I didn't check out the VP inventory as closely as I
might. Over the last couple years the Sheraton had been touting their VP
inventory and I know they had some full-pay JoB when I was there in '03, but
my info is out of date.

The thing to keep in mind when planning a first-time trip to Tunica is that
the casinos are in "clusters" with some standing alone by themselves.
Besides those in the clusters, they are not within walking distance of each
other. The clusters are generally a 10-minute drive from each other up and
down the river (search for "tunica casino maps" to get a better indication
of their layout). Of the three choices you mentioned, the Horseshoe and
Sheraton are next door to each other (along with the Gold Strike) in one of
these clusters and you can walk easily between the three. The Grand is by
itself and to visit another casino you will have to drive. I believe it is
the largest casino in Tunica, however, so that may offset the need to travel
somewhat.

I have stayed at the Horseshoe a couple times and would have no problems
recommending it. The rooms are standard (they reminded me of a regular
Vegas MGM Grand room) - nice, clean, roomy but not huge. There can be some
long walks to the elevator (nothing like MGM, though) but once on the ground
floor the casino is just steps away. I haven't stayed at the Sheraton but
from all accounts I've heard/read their "jacuzzi rooms" are equally nice and
all rooms have a jacuzzi tub. They average about $20 more than a comparable
Horseshoe room for a weekday rate, so you probably can't go wrong there.

We haven't tried any of the steakhouses (we're more the buffet/snack
bar/coffee shop crowd). The Town Square buffet at Horseshoe is generally
considered one of (if not the) best in Tunica and we would recommend it. We
also tried the breakfast buffet at the Grand but caught it right before they
were changing to the lunch menu so the selection wasn't as great as it
normally would be. It was still very good, however.

You're probably already aware of it but Memphis is 30 minutes away and
there's plenty to do there. I'm sure you'll get more input from others as
well.

Have fun!

The hotel and casino are connected at both the Horseshoe and the Sheraton.
The Grand has both and you have to specify that you only want the casino
hotel. Sheraton and Horseshoe are side by side within walking distance. The
grand is stuck off all by itself.

Sheraton by far has the best VP of the three with full pay JoB, Triple
Deuces and Super aces. The Horseshoe VP is abysmal with 7/5 and 6/5 JoB up
to $100. The food at Sheraton is pretty bad, the rooms are a little worn but
clean. Food at Horseshoe was very good and you can use your Harrahs comp
points at either place. I don't know about the rooms at Horseshoe but the
Grand Rooms were dirty last time we stayed there.

just got back from tunica a week ago. stayed at the horseshoe. i
thought the rooms were nice. big and roomy with a couch and chair
and a big soaking tub. didn't pay much attention to vp because i
went with my 2 sister-in-laws and they are into slots so i just
played with them. the horseshoe doesn't have a 24 hour coffee shop
so we ate at the sheraton late one night. it was not very good. we
did eat at the sheraton steak house - louie's i think - and they have
a pretty good prime rib special with a nice salad bar. we drove over
to the grand and the casino there was very vegas-like. but i
understand their hotel is not attached to the casino - bummer. we
did go up to memphis and spend the day - did graceland, beale st, the
duck boat tour and we drove over the bridge to arkansas and hit the
greyhound track. we had a great time.

she'd never go back. That was only because the hotel was not connected

It's curious that she would complain about hotels that are not
connected to the casino, then go on to say the Grand is nice, since two
out of the three hotels at the Grand do not connect to the casino and
you have to be shuttled back and forth

Or maybe she stayed at Bally's. If so, I can understand why she would
not go back.

No, she stayed at the Grand and thought the hotel was good but wouldn"t stay there again because of it not being connected to casino. Our group usually stays at the Grand, so she wouldn't go again.
