I've been to Tunica a few times and enjoy it quite a bit. It's a shorter
trip for us (and therefore cheaper). Our last trip was primarily a
blackjack trip so I didn't check out the VP inventory as closely as I
might. Over the last couple years the Sheraton had been touting their VP
inventory and I know they had some full-pay JoB when I was there in '03, but
my info is out of date.
The thing to keep in mind when planning a first-time trip to Tunica is that
the casinos are in "clusters" with some standing alone by themselves.
Besides those in the clusters, they are not within walking distance of each
other. The clusters are generally a 10-minute drive from each other up and
down the river (search for "tunica casino maps" to get a better indication
of their layout). Of the three choices you mentioned, the Horseshoe and
Sheraton are next door to each other (along with the Gold Strike) in one of
these clusters and you can walk easily between the three. The Grand is by
itself and to visit another casino you will have to drive. I believe it is
the largest casino in Tunica, however, so that may offset the need to travel
somewhat.
I have stayed at the Horseshoe a couple times and would have no problems
recommending it. The rooms are standard (they reminded me of a regular
Vegas MGM Grand room) - nice, clean, roomy but not huge. There can be some
long walks to the elevator (nothing like MGM, though) but once on the ground
floor the casino is just steps away. I haven't stayed at the Sheraton but
from all accounts I've heard/read their "jacuzzi rooms" are equally nice and
all rooms have a jacuzzi tub. They average about $20 more than a comparable
Horseshoe room for a weekday rate, so you probably can't go wrong there.
We haven't tried any of the steakhouses (we're more the buffet/snack
bar/coffee shop crowd). The Town Square buffet at Horseshoe is generally
considered one of (if not the) best in Tunica and we would recommend it. We
also tried the breakfast buffet at the Grand but caught it right before they
were changing to the lunch menu so the selection wasn't as great as it
normally would be. It was still very good, however.
You're probably already aware of it but Memphis is 30 minutes away and
there's plenty to do there. I'm sure you'll get more input from others as
well.
Have fun!

Hi Gang:
Hedy and I received a free junket offer today for a trip to Tunica in
January. It includes free airfare from Newark to Memphis, shuttle service
from
Memphis to one of three hotels and a three-night stay. The hotel choices are
the
Horseshoe, Grand Casino or Sheraton.
We're hoping to get some feedback from the groups about the three hotels.
We've never been to Tunica but have talked about going there and doing some
sightseeing in Memphis during our stay.
Any info on the quality of the hotels, VP inventory, restaurants etc. would
be greatly appreciated. I checked out the vpFREE database for VP but I'm not
sure how up to date it is. So, if anyone has been in Tunica recently and can
offer some opinions we would be very thankful.
Regards,
CoachVee (Tom V) & Hedy
