Since we were only in our second year of "advantage play" it was kind of
discouraging to only get 1 royal in 134,000 hands in 2003. The play was
all JOB triple play. We were able to maintain .9% CB and BB and this
helped. Very good records showed that our losses were not out of line
for the hands we were dealt. Without changing a thing, we have had 3
royals in the last 35,000 hands and all is well. Maybe this info will
help other beginners to realize why they say your bankroll should be in
the range of 3-5 royals. TB

Being one of those beginners, could you please explain this a bit more?? Is it one of the below:
1) approx 40,000 hands per Royal... therefore 3-5 Royals is 120,000-200,000 hands needed for bankroll??
2) Or are you saying 3-5 times the payoff on royals....dollars equals 4000 for example times 3-5 (12-20K)needed to play dollars.
Also does that change significantly for different games? Negative games you could run out of money regardless of bankroll I think.
Hope it is #2 or I'm stuck with nickles at the Cannery forever!!!
This bankroll is still the part of the VP experience I don't have any intelligent thoughts on. When I go to LV I have an amount I am willing to loose. Looks like I might have to adjust to lower cost games if I want to have an adquate bankroll.
Thanks.

Simple bankroll calculation for a trip to Vegas based on the amount you are willing to lose. You will need to be honest with yourself about how many hours you want to play. What game will you play? How many hands per hour do you play?
I will be going to LV 1/31. I will play .25 FPDW and I want to play at least 20 hours on my bankroll. I play 500 hands per hour so that equals 10,000 hands.
WinPoker gives the total return as 100.76. Subtact the return for a royal (1.77) and the return for 4 deuces (4.07) and you get 94.92 as your return with no RF or 4 deuces. Over 10,000 hands the smaller wins will usually produce close to the expected return.
10,000 hands equals $12,500. $12,500 times .9492 equals $11,865 and the difference is your expected loss and required bankroll of $635. There is a good chance you will hit the 4 deuces once or twice in 10,000 hands, but there is about a 13.5% chance you will hit zero. You need to be mentally and financially prepared for this event before you arrive or it could ruin your trip. You can do a similar calculation for other VP games. I am not an expert player so I will take a little more than $635. Cash back will also help the safety margin if it is available. I also believe you should play quarter instead of nickel games if at all possible because you will be comped better even if you have to play fewer hours per trip. Hope this example helps.
I just discovered vpfree (just before my next trip to LV!!) and I would like to thank everyone who contributes to this terrific resource.

Well said, never looked at it that way. I would be lucky if I play 200 hands an hour, I like playing slow and am looking for accuracy. I have thrown away a pair of threes on occasion worring about the other hands....
so I am trying to be accurate until I get better...

Again, well said, and it is easy to apply.

This makes a lot of sense as well, and you are right. I have some calculating and timing of my play to do. I can play quarters, just probably five times slower!!!!
Good luck and thank you. I agree vpFree is a great resource. Hope to someday have something intelligent to add for someone else's benefit, but as a newbie everyone knows more than me....
