Tracking the "quad near misses" - any benefits?

A little known fact about CH's [Casino Hustlers] is they all got their start
at the Western Hotel counting numbers. What do I mean by that? Thanks for
asking, I'll tell you. Sit next to somebody playing any game, slots VP anything.
Show an interest in their hits and misses. Call out numbers you see in the
patterns on the screen. "Ok there's a pair of 4's... Ahhh another pair of
fours. Opps a 9.." etc. When they hit a big jackpot they'll tip you.

"No harm, no blood, no foul" intended. Just plain asking for others'
opinions.

A few weeks back, a couple playing Super Aces next to me keeps saying
some numbers like "10 and 4", "18 and 8", etc. When they hit 4 Kings
or 4 Sevens, I hear the count "0 and 8" or "0 and 6". When they hit the
4 Aces, then I hear the count "6 and 0" or "12 and 0". When one of them
needs to take a break, s/he tells the partner what the "count" is.

The couple were tracking the near misses for the quad "Aces" and for
the non-Aces and they seem to be doing very well.

Any benefit(s) for doing this kind of tracking?

I should have figured I was doing something wrong.

Until one fellow I was playing next to uttered something rather foul
under his breath, I figured someone playing deuces would share my
statistical fascination with how often I hit quad 2's while playing Jacks.

A slight variation; In the old days when there were change persons,
most good change folks would refer you to a machine saying someone
just put a bundle in it. I guess you might say they were CH's with a
job.

Once on a prog quarter bank of JOB, my wife was talked into switching
to another machine by change person. Change gal was on the other side
of bank and a seat opened up. She held the seat asking my wife if she
wanted to switch. Change gal thought the machine was "due". Wife
switched machines and the machine she jumped from hit royal in a few
plays @ $3200 and change. Of course if the machine switched to would
have hit; a tip would have been in order. Thought my wife was going to
choke the change girl. She still talks about that day today; 15 yrs
later. Usually change folks don't go that far out on a limb; getting
someone to change machines. They just refer you when you start playing.

Of course, as we all know here, change folks knowing when a machine is
ripe was only possible during the old mechanical slot machine days.
