Tourist things to do? In Vegas or reasonable driving distance?

Hi all,

Last visit stayed Red Rock. Decided to go Red Rock park. Another time did Dam for about 10th time.

I’m wondering what u guys might suggest, like downtown etc. Interesting places to see…

I have always wanted to drive to Grand Canyon, but didn’t. Flew over many times. How about Death Valley?

We’ve gone to Laughlin, Mesquite, Mt Morris, but so many years ago. Used to base out of Vegas to visit friends in Calif. Stayed in aunts house in high desert and shoulda went to Roy Rogers place. Even Disney Land and Phoenix driving out of Vegas. Of course staying over nite when miles away.

Interested in any crazy ideas.

Hope the 4th brought you all happy times today…Cheers…Jeep

We once did a full day trip to Death Valley and it was great.

If you are interested in birds, the Henderson Bird Sanctuary (http://www.cityofhenderson.com/henderson-happenings/facilities/henderson-bird-viewing-preserve) is a great place to visit. The area is the output of the sewage treatment facility. There is no odor and it can be filled with waterfowl – especially during migration season.

Another good place to see birds or just take a nice walk is the Las Vegas Wash at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Las_Vegas_Wash

Chinatown is an interesting place to walk around.

If you are looking for international food items you can go to the International Marketplace at 5000 S. Decatur

My son’s family enjoyed Valley of Fire. They didn’t plan to go there, but there was a problem on the highway and they diverted everyone. Said it was a beautiful place and would like to back and see more. I believe it was about 30 miles from Las Vegas.

Jeep asks: “How about Death Valley?”

In July? That’s when they run the Badwater Ultramarathon. Good luck, I hope you win.

Hey there, Jeep - here are a couple suggestions. I’ve been taken to both by friends of mine who are locals & had very enjoyable experiences. Springs Preserve is actually quite large and, as well as special exhibits, has beauriful gardens, as well as a large gallery offering a walth-through the history of Las Vegas. Well worth the admission price.

(went here in December when the neighboring Cactus Garden is strung with holiday lighting decorations (thousands of lights!)

Oops - “beautiful” gardens & “walk-through”

Hi all

I will be doing Vegas late fall. As reminder, i usually stay 12 days+. Always look for tourist things.
I’m thinking about going to Grand Canyon. Looking over the rim of canyon on my

bucket list. How long would it take to drive from Vegas? Is it worth the time? Whats there to do?

Thought about area 51 also. But, I’d guess nothing there? Always looking for unique things to

see or do.

Cheers…Jeep

“Is it worth the time?” Absolutely! The Grand Canyon cannot be captured in a photograph. You have to see it to experience it. I doubt you’ll be disappointed, no matter how long it takes to get there.

IMO, it’s much better to see it from the South Rim, especially if it’s your first visit. When you come in from the North, you travel through other canyons and somewhat similar terrain. But approaching from the South, you drive through forest pretty much until you pop out on the edge of this humongous hole in the Earth.

If you have NEVER been to the Grand Canyon – you MUST go! It’s about an 8 hour

drive from Vegas. An option would be to drive to Laughlin and stay overnite there and

then get started early in the am to GC. It’s about a 4-5+ hour drive from Laughlin. If

you want to stay overnite IN the park you have to book about a year ahead but there are

many properties just out-side the park entrance in Tusayan AZ that you can book on much

shorter notice. Once you get into the park – if you go AFTER Sept 30 the internal buses

stop running and you can drive your own vehicle to the look-out points. We went once in

Feb (yes there was some snow on the ground) and at times we were the ONLY people at

most of the lookout points. I’d say it would be a very LONG day if you drove to and from

the GC in one day from Vegas. Another option would be to drive from Vegas and then drive

back to Laughlin (for a same day trip) and stay overnite there. (especially if you can get

free rooms at Harrahs or any of the other properties in Laughlin) I’m not sure how much

time you want to spend at the Grand Canyon or what your budget considerations are. We

spent a full day at the Canyon just driving to all the lookouts and viewing from there. We

didn’t do any hiking, lectures or mule rides and we felt like we still really saw the GC. It

is a most amazing view. If you’re over 62 you have your National Parks Senior Pass–right?

Good for you and up to 4 (I think) others. Enjoy! Jean H

Barring unusual circumstances or frequent stops it's more like 4.5-5 hours, one-way, from LV to either Rim. The South Rim is a lot more built up in terms of places to stay and facilities and is probably better for a first timer, but the North Rim is still a great place to visit, and my preference between the two. It's more laid back, and because it's at higher elevation when you look from North to South you get to see the plateau approaching the Rim before the dropoff.

But it's hard to go wrong either way, and I agree it's an absolute must-see-in-person experience!

`Another idea to visit the Grand Canyon is to take
the train from Williams AZ.

You stay over night at the hotel next to the train station. They have
various packages.

We did a package with 1st night at Williams, 2nd night at a GC lodge,
3rd night back at Williams. Most meals were included. Two blocks from
the Williams hotel is the Route 66 tourist experience.

When we went to the Canyon from a couple of years ago, we stopped in Laughlin overnight. The drive to the south the next day was about 3.5-4 hours.

I believe so, but not 100% sure.

Hi everyone.

Thanks for all great suggestions from a year ago. I am planning to do Vegas next Spring. Move to Laughlin for 2-3 days and take in Grand Canyon. Want to do it as an early LONG day trip. I wonder what folks here think about plan? I’m estimating 8 hrs drive time and about 6 hrs to see the canyon. As I post I’m thinking might be better to get a room at Canyon. Could drive straight there from Vegas. Next day do the Canyon. Then a nite or 2 in Laughlin, Take river ride etc. Catch dam on way back Vegas. I wonder if dam has filled back up again.

Lastime I there, bathtub ring was 35 40 feet above water level.

Cheers…Jeep

We went to the canyon straight from LV, then spent the night in Sedona. Went for a train ride in verde canyon RR the next day, spent another night after eating and poking around Sedona, then back to LV, not much farther ride and we saw some different stuff. Sedona is gorgeous.

NO, the Dam is not filled…worse than the last time you saw it!

Drive to Willians, AZ for night stay then do the Canyon the next day. You can stay in Flagstaff for the night or you can drive to Laughlin.
