The hotel/front desk safe deposit box is a much "safer" place to store
something rather than a hotel room safe. I know of someone who had their
room safe broken into. When that happens the hotel is NOT liable for
your losses. If something happens to your valuables in the safe deposit
box, you may have recourse since the hotel IS responsible for those.
Unfortunately the room safe is usually a much more "convenient" choice.
