Casino-comped meals not subject to sales tax
The Nevada Supreme Court has ruled that casino-comped meals are not subject
to state sales and use tax.
Tomorrows news
Hey, Scott.
Are meal vouchers (like the ones that Venetian offers to tournament player
for the Grand Lux Cafe) considered a "comp," as far as sales tax is
concerned?
How about meals purchased with the $50 Harrah's Visa gift card that I got
from participating in last week's slot tournament at Paris? I still have
$25 left on it and was wondering if I should make sure they don't charge me
sales tax on it.

The Grand Lux isn't owned by the Venetian, so, assuming what Scot
reported doesn't affect that situation, sales tax will still be
charged on comps there.
This is important for me because as a frequent visitor to the Palms, when
using points (which I'm assuming is considered comp) they consistently
charge tax. I was going to bring that up to them last time it happened but
forgot.
Do you think points are considered comp as well?

Richard,
I work for the Palms. No, we do not charge tax when using points, at least in the restaurants.
I have never seen that happen. Please let me know if this does happen again and I can look
into it for you. If you want, you can send me a private email with your player's card # and I
can pull some of your restaurant transactions and mail you the proof.

All of our conjecture is irrelevant because the article in the LVRJ is about how the comped
meals are tax-free FOR THE CASINO, not for the people getting the comps. It basically
states that if the casino doesn't charge a tax on the comp, they don't have to pay use tax
to the state. The casinos will get millions in refunds now.

I'm not sure, but I think Panda Express charges tax on comps. Haven't
paid close attention because the we hadn't thought about it before now.

Yes, they do...but they are not owned by the Palms and therefore
charging the tax is correct.

I want to thank you for offering to look into this for me. My wife and I
finally got back to Little Buddha just last night.
We asked the waiter about the tax issue and he said that because the Palms
does not directly own the restaurant that they continue to charge tax. I
didn't push the matter further with him at the time.
