Tomorrow's free class at 10 a.m. at Silverton is Advanced 10/7
Double Bonus. This is the only class in the series that deals with
penalty cards. We'll discuss such things as
1. When is 'KQ3' superior to 'KQ'
2. When is 'K73' superior to KQ
3. When are various SF3 0h1i superior to various RF2
combinations.
4. When is an unsuited AKQ or AKJ the correct play
5. When is a SF3 superior to 'KQ' but not 'KJ'
6. When is a SF3 0h2i superior to 'QT'
7. When is 'JT4' superior to 'JT'
8. When is AK, AQ, or AJ superior to the A by itself
etc.
It helps if you are at least familiar with the proper play of
the game going in, but it isn't necessary.
In sum, these penalties do not amount to much. If somebody can
actually play perfectly without these penalty situations, they are
getting the vast majority of the value from the game. But such a person
is very rare. Most of us fall short of whatever goals we set for
ourselves. Taking the time to learn the penalty card situations will
force you to spend enough time on the game that you understand a lot
more of the non-penalty card situations as well.
Even if you have the philosophy that memorizing penalty card
situations is a waste of time for you, that's different from learning
ABOUT penalty cards. There have been thirty promotions in the past
couple of years where I used my knowledge of penalty cards to help
evaluate how much the promotion was worth, or how to play it. Strong
players need to be fluent in the logic of penalty cards even if they
choose to disregard them on certain games.
Finally, we'll be going over the report produced by Video Poker
for Winners that explains how many times each penalty card situation
occurs and what it is worth. This report tells you, for example, that
there are 2,184 different hands (out of 2,598,960 possible hands) that
you hold AKQ unsuited. We'll discuss where this number comes from. The
report will also tell you that the size of the error from holding the A
by itself from Ah Ks 7d 6h 5c is different than from Ah Ks 7d 6h 4c. In
class we'll discuss why.
So if you're in Vegas tomorrow at 10 a.m., most of you will find
the class eye-opening.
