Tokens in a machine

I'd like to report an incident that I had playing downtown LV. I cashed
out 500 coins on a 25c machine and went to the cashier to have them
convert the quarters to dollars. The counting machine reported $121 and
4 nickels? instead of the $125 that I was expecting. The cashier said
they couldn't do anything about it except call a slot attendant.
Fortunately the 500 coin out was still showing on the machine. So they
opened it up and did a hopper test. When they looked at the coins
ejected, there were tokens intermixed. They paid me the difference from
the hopper.

We had to leave, so didn't know what happened after that. Went back the
next day and everything seemed back to normal.

The coins are real US quarters and tokens are worthless imitations
sometimes used as substitutes on machines played at home for "fun"
only. I'm surprised that the coin acceptor didn't reject them. There
is a real quarter placed in the coin acceptor to test coin acceptance.
If you wanted to make a machine play for "fun", you could replace the
real quarter with a token. Then only tokens would work in the machine.

I would expect the casino to empty the hopper and refill it with new
coins. Just wondering though if the coin counters reject the tokens
too, or do they end up in a bag to fill another machine?

This would be a reason to cash out with a known amount of coinage. When
we get shorted sometimes, is it due to tokens? I would think that the
coin counting machines would catch and reject the fake tokens.
Otherwise, they would be recirculated to other machines. I'm still
wondering why the coin counter showed 4 nickels from my cup of
quarters? Were they also tokens and ended up in a bag of nickels?
