Today's News and the Original RIO

From today's LVA Today's News, a blurb of interest:

"MGM Mirage announced today that it's entered into an agreement to sell its
Colorado Belle and Edgewater hotel-casinos located in Laughlin, Nevada, to a
group led by Anthony Marnell III for $200 million. Marnell is the son of Tony
Marnell II, founder of the Rio hotel-casino and Marnell Corrao Associates
design
group, and is himself CEO of Tririga Inc., a Web-based database for the
design-build industry."

So how did the Rio open for VP? Heck when did the Rio actually open and any
history lessons? I know there are several of you that have lamented the sale
of the Rio to HET? I bet alot of you thought HET actually built the joint!

I need some cool old time Rio stories for my Laughlin CB/EW bartenders.

I was not in on the early days of the Rio but I remember up until a
few years ago their best play for dollars was 10/7 Double Bonus.
These were downgraded BEFORE the HET takeover.

We were at the Rio about a month after it opened. Since the LV
trips have become more frequent, the years blend together, and I am
hazy as to the exact year. My quess is that the Rio opened about 15
years ago.

We were entranced with the Rio initially! The casino and all-suite
rooms were beautiful and elegant. The restaurants, including the
buffet, offered delectable selections. The VP also was just great!

There was an abundance of FPDW as well as other FP games. Sigh and
Sob! Gone forever now. And MIA LONG before Harrah's took over.
Too bad!

I'm sure that the rooms are still quite nice. IMO, the dining
options are no longer special. The VP is dreadful, as is the BJ.

Not much resaon to patronize them anymore.

1990 sounds right to me. Was good for VP & tables as had a lot of
locals then. Buffet was very inexpensive then as well. Ridiculous
now. Have not recovered from reading that Caesars trip report &
those meal prices. Even just signing a comp for food at those prices
would literally make me ill. No food worth a 1/10 of that ....
