To play or not to play?

I'm fairly new to the VP game. I live in California, so I play VP to
get comped trips to Vegas rather than play to earn bounce back cash
local-style.

So, since my goal for playing, is really to get marketing offers for
free trips/events (and maybe some cash or free play as well), I am
wondering what the best way to keep getting marketing offers is. To
start, usually put in a 20K -30K coin-in day at a "new" casino. This
is done to trigger marketing offers for future stays.

When I do get an offer and use it, I'll play 10-15K coin-in a day at
the property (plus some green chip BJ). My thought was that this was a
good amount of play to give the property for comping my stay. However,
I am starting to wonder if I'm doing this incorrectly.

By playing less on the free trips than I did on my initial $30K day,
every day I play on a free offer lowers the average play of my
account. Now, I've assumed that the marketing department (or someone)
checks to see that I played while staying on an offer, but this could
be wrong.

If it is wrong, than I am hurting my chances of future offers by giving
the casino some action (but not the same level of action as on my first
trip).

I'm thinking of doing DIAD on my next trip. If the offers from
Harrah's are as good as I've heard for Diamond players, than I really
don't want to mess this up.

Anyone have any advice for someone new to the VP-comp-stay game?

Thanks in advance for any info anyone can share.
