Tipping the Valet

At least $3 to $5 both coming in and going out. Think how much your car is
worth, and how much you're about to blow in the casino.
I am a tourist though and not a full time Vegas VP junkie out chasing
jackpots for a living, trying to forget they're stuck in the desert, so
YMMV.

When I go to Nevada (& I've been at least 350 times since the mid 90's)I generally check into a half dozen hotels to get whatever they're offerring me each visit, and I always valet park. The only time I ever tip on the way in is when I drive my best car and want it looked after out front (I give the attendant a twenty) and that hasn't been very often. All other times I'm in a rental, and I have never given more than a buck on the way out--regardless if I'm at Sam's Town or Wynn.

I don't worry about what they think or what kind of looks they give me, or if they pool tips or not. None of those are the reason I'm there. My rental car isn't worth a thing to me, and I've never even considered blowing money in any casino.

I do not think a $5 tip is going to make the Valet treat your car with kid gloves. They still park cars close together and ding them with open doors.

Even in the 80s, I always tipped at least a few bucks.
And if I was hoping for special treatment, I'd tip as much as $20 on the way in.

They could see I wasn't a 'high roller', but rather was trying to be nice, have
fun and get great service.

It always works for me.
The rest of the Valets find out very soon that you are a) nice and b)
generous and go out of their way for you.

I really don't calc my tips against me Ev.

About 6-7 years ago, a coworker said her brother (HS grad) worked as a
valet at the Venetian. She said he was making around $70,000/year.

I don't ever use the valet parking.... Too cheap and don't trust them
with my Corvette!

I find that some people like to overtip (because they are rich or morons, most likely the second) and then like regular people to follow suit. You can tip whatever excessive amount you want but don't tell me what to do. Thank you very much!

This old story is supposed to have come from Sinatra himself.

Sinatra is leaving one of the places, maybe the Sands or D.I. Valet brought up his car. He jumps in then asks the valet "Hey, Kid! What's the biggest tip ya ever got?" The kid says "A hundred dollars!" Sinatra figured to show off a little. He pulled out two benjies and handed them to the kid. Sinatra went to pull away but yelled back at the kid "Hey, Kid! Who the hell gave ya the hundred?" The kid yelled back "You did!"

I usually tip $2 on the way in and $3 on the way out.

The only time I ever tipped a $20 was at the Beau Rivage when I was told the wait was over an hour. I had my car in 5 minutes.

From the perspective of a couple of valets. They don't expect a tip at drop off and are always a little surprised at getting one, but all you'll see is a poker face. The exception is somebody giving a $10 or $20 and asking for the car to be left up front. The tip is expected at pickup and is generally $2-$5.
