Eek!!! I hate the idea of paying dues to someone who can then tell me when
I can or cannot work. I like the idea of being able to keep most of the
money I earn and work where and when I want. If I don't like a particular
job situation, I would want the decision to be mine as to being able to stay

there or go work somewhere else.

What a mis-understanding of the role of union's in our society. The union
belongs to the workers who make it up, how can it tell you anything not
supported by the majority.
Unions are one of the last places where democracy still is practiced. Do you
have a boss
who tells when and how to work and what you receive in compensation?

I was going to end my last message by saying that I didn't want to get into an argument about unions, buy then I figured that this was a video poker forum and someone surely doesn't want to discuss political issues. I was wrong!

I am a conservative Republican (about most things) and you aren't going to change my mind. Back in 1994, a strike cost my White Sox a chance at winning the World Series. I had to wait 11 years for another chance. I had bosses for 25 years when I was a computer programmer and sure, they had a big say in my compensation and whether I stuck around or not. But I never paid them a fee for that privilege. I did have to actually pay a monthly fee when I worked for CSX railroad in Baltimore. It was the equivlalent to union dues and we had to pay the fee because for some reason the union forced the company's hand to make all non-union employees pay. My salary offer was increased by the amount on the fees, so it was transparent to me, but cost the company.

Unions may be good for certain trades, but how irresponsible is it for air traffic controllers to jeopardize the safety in the airways? Or nurses to stop caring for critically ill patients? Or teachers to stop educating our young children?

Again, I say if you don't like the situation you are in, go find another one. I want to work as a poker dealer and am willing to put up with some things. I don't have to do this. I could go back to working as a programmer for a defense contractor again if I so choose.
