For "Las Vegas" that would include all the numerous non-union jobs in the
entire city. Even at that rate it's 50% more. Plus the union jobs include
full benefits. That is not insignificant.

It can't be that MUCH more. The first figure is the mean hourly national
wage. The second is for Las Vegas.

Not as of 10:30 a.m. (Wed.) -- that's what I ended up playing -- but I don't know long this will last.

Yup, $22,880 a year is a mighty fine wage, even in Las Vegas.

The last time I checked one of the casino websites,
(planet hollywood?) room attendant jobs were advertised
at $12 to $14 per hour. I don't think this is underpaid.
But I tip $5/night anyway for a comped room. It gets me
extra soap and shampoo which I donate to my local homeless
shelter. At Caesars they didn't seem too excited about the
$5, but at luxor the room girl was so happy she thanked
me so much I was starting to feel uncomfortable.

Fair enough, but you still haven't answered what other people are
asking, which is why you consider slot attendants an exception to your
rule or stance on tipping. Aren't hand pays part of their job, or do
you consider that an extra service?

That's funny. When I leave a tip, I usually get extra towels, soap, and other things.

So, just because I'm a real PITA, let me work the numbers.

Let's assume a moderately adequate new room attendant gets hired, at the average salary of $13. She'll make $520 for a 40 hour week, and the princely sum of $27,040 per annum. How many rooms will she clean per day? Let's make the assumption she averages 10 per hour, or 80 per day, that's 400 a week, and giving her 2 weeks off, 20,000 per year.

A quarter player will put in $1.25 per hand, and average, say, 600 hands per hour for a cash-in of $750 per hour. Assuming six hours of play in a day, and six days total play, that's a total cash-in of $27,000.

So our room attendant will work all year to earn, before taxes, what we might throw in the machine on a not overly long trip. If everyone tipped a buck a day, she'd make another $20,000. Since not everyone tips, and some tip more, let's call that $1 the average.

Sorry, but to me, I think I'll play a couple of hands a day less, and give the person who cleans up after me a few bucks a day. And that will help make up for those of you who feel she's overpaid at $27,000. Just my opinion (and as for the politics issue that was raised, yes, I am a conservative Republican)

Drew,

Can you elaborate on the 'other things' you get when you tip?
Depending on your answer, maybe I should start tipping??!!

Curtis

P.S. The only trip reports worth my time are yours. Why haven't you written
any lately?

This is exactly how I feel about it. I like to think
the extra couple of bucks helps house/cloth/feed and
educate kids supported by hard working people. By
the way I'm liberal as hell. Seems there is some
common ground left in this politically fractious world.

I always tip $5 to $10 a night for housekeeping. I also leave my room clean. All tables and counter are wiped dowm, towels in one place to pick up, all garbage in basket ect. I also ask for extra coffee, lotion and towels and get them with a smiley face thank you from housekeeping. They remember me and I get great service when I go back too. They make my life easier and I appreciate it. Tipping is a personal decision but tipping good works for me. I tip $1 per drink at machine so if I want a drink and water I tip $2, Drink service is great and I get serviced every 15 miutes which is faster than I can drink. All for a dollar or two. Just makes it easier on me. I always figure about $200 in tips for a week, maybe more. I stock up on singles when I get there.
