Tipping cocktail waitresses...
For many years, I would tip a cocktail waitress 50 cents for a drink.
My reasoning was that a 50 cent piece was a little heavier then two
quarters, hence, it would seem like a better tip psychologically.
For the last few years though, I have been tipping a $1.
Is a $1 tip the norm for tipping a cocktail waitress in Vegas today?
I know Mopar Man likes the idea of a $5 tip, but that seems a little
excessive to me.

In part it depends on what the player is playing as to how much is tipped as the "norm." Table players tend to tip better than people playing slots - hence pit shifts are highly desired amongst cocktail servers. I mentioned the other thread from yesterday to my wife last night and she said the average on the slot floor is probably about $.50 but more in the poker room. I would guess that these days a $1.00 tip would be seen as a decent tip and should ensure that you receive decent service in turn. A big tip will get you remembered as will a small tip (or no tip) with any cocktail server...it all boils down to each individual tipping what they feel is fair for the service they receive.
BTW: I always tip $2 a drink, but I think that people in the service industry or closely related to those in the service industry tip better anyway.

I was at a major Strip casino recently playing VP right outside the
poker room. The cocktail waitress and I got very well acquainted as
she took good care of me. She told me that, at least at her place,
the table poker players were the worst tippers in the casino. One
guy gave her a quarter and asked for change! Maybe it's not like
that everywhere, especially now that everyone with a television
thinks they can play Texas Hold 'Em like a pro.
I like good beverage service when I play, so I always tip at least
$2. If I order top shelf brands (in a casino that has them,
anyway), I always give the waitress $5 at the time I order. I can
usually count on excellent service.
