tip at the cashier cage

It's hard for me to tip a person for doing their job - cashing in money
seems to be a cashier's job! I'll only tip if I had an exceptionally lucky day.

Tips for waitresses/waiters including drink people seem more acceptable to
me - they are presumably only getting minimum wage and thus that 15% is needed
to bring them up to stuff.

Similarly I won't tip doormen - that is their job. Also I see almost
everyone tipping them $1, which mean most are making huge amounts. I've heard many
longtime doormen (car door openers that is) make over $100,000 a year.

I'd rather tip low level cleaning people, who do the dirtiest work for the
least pay, and occasionally will do so. I also regularly tip the maids - I
tip each day, because the maid may change each day.

One addition from my experience. Once in AC left the room sign to
clean and left my daily tip. Doubled back to the room because I
forgot something. I took a scenic elevator ride. As I got near my
room I saw a person leaving my room. I believe it may have been a
supervisor. In any event, the tip was gone and it was taken by
someone other than the person who would eventially clean my room.
Since then, if possible, I will ask person in hall with cleaning
cart, "Are you cleaning #---- ? If they are to clean my room I'll
tip them directly and sometime ask for extra mouth wash or towels
etc. I don't imagine tips are swiped very often, especially today
with room door locks that track all who enter room.

It happens more often than one might think. I know some people will
leave tips inside the mini fridge or under the blanket to make sure
it goes to the proper person.

I agree, Linda. One day I was fortunate enough to get ducks twice
within a short period of time on the 5c loose deuces at Fitgerald's.
There was a woman who was diligent about cleaning the ashes, etc. out
of the coin trays on the machines around me and I gave her $5 when I
hit the 2nd time. She was totally surprised and really appreciative.
To me they are the ones who deserve it. I think I might have given a
buck to the ones who brought me the $125 but I'm not sure why.
