Time to first royal?

How long did it take all of you to hit your first royal? I moved to Vegas
about a month ago and have been killing time here and there with deuces and
double bonus. I've been tracking my initial coin-in and coin-out (but not
my total action), and so far I've put in about $1500 on quarter machines
(don't know how much that turns out being in actual action), and so far I'm
seeing only 41.1% payback on FPDW (although DB, NSUD, AA and Joker bring my
total up to 72.7%), and I'm at the point where I'm starting to feel like
I'll never hit a royal (which I know is irrational but hard to discount
anyway) and I'm just curious how much time and money it took some of you to
get your cherry popped.

I am currently behind by over 4 royal cycles, (180,000+hands). I
am very under-deuced as well. I beleive if you go through past
issues of Bob Dancer's articles on Casino Gaming or Jean Scott's
article on Frugal Fridays you might get some helpful information
there. I am sure Bob or Jean can answer your question very
thoroughly.

On average, it takes about 40K hands. There's likely a good handful
around here who didn't see one until after 100K hands ... some not
until after 200K.

It's not unusual to drop the equivalent of 2 or 3 royals ($2K-$3K on
quarters) between hits. The game isn't for the faint of heart and
certainly not a way to make an easy buck. (Of course, some of us have
seen the extreme upside of 2 or 3 royals in a day as well

I'll briefly remark on your play comments: Play accuracy is one of
the essentials to play survival. Errors cost real money. As a
beginning player you may wish to concentrate your play on a single
game, putting in a lot of practice with a software tutor such as
Winpoker or Frugal Video Poker until you know game strategy cold. If
you jump around games without a well versed familiarity with
appropriate strategy, I guarantee you'll be unnecessarily handing
money over to the casino.

Re the last question: 2nd date, a pepperoni pizza and six pack of beer.

I am in the same boat as you missdeuces. 4+ royal drought cycle since
April and way behind on deuces as well (though deuces is far from my
only game). But I was way luckier than I should have been in January,
so some of it is correction - but brutal none-the-less

I don't recall exactly, but I think I had played VP for about 6
months or so before hitting a Royal. I have now hit 272 lifetime
Royals. (Don't get too excited - the vast majority of these have
been on 50 and 100 play machines).

and so far I'm

seeing only 41.1% payback on FPDW (although DB, NSUD, AA and Joker

How are you calculating these numbers? Because it's very difficult
to average much worse than 85% payback on video poker if you play for
any reasonable amount of time, even with horrible luck. If you are
just dividing (cash out)/(cash in), then you aren't using the correct
formula. (Often you will have 0% return using this formula if you
play the credits down to zero.) Instead you should divide your win
(or loss) by total action to figure your % return. For instance, if
you fed the machine $100, played for 2 hours on single line quarters
(about $1500 in total action @ 600 hph), then cashed out $20, your
actual % loss was $80/$1500 = 5.3%, or just below a 95% actual return.

Just thought I would update you - playing today put me over the 5
cycle mark. Finally right before leaving I decide to play a .50cent
multiplay and lo and behold...picked up a royal. of course, it was
great to finally see one but on the downside...it was a .50 cent
royal for $2K and my normal denom of play is $1 so...it was a bit
exassperating. But I am still happy... Royals do exist still.
