If you're talking about random machines then the best thing to
do is to pick the paytable with the highest ER if you want to
maximize your EV per hour (with the usual disclaimers about
denomination, bankroll, acceptable risk etc.).
If you're talking about non-random machines that are negatively
biased, don't play, if you like money.
Anecdotal evidence to the contrary is either too limited or
suffers from selective memory, and isn't persuasive.

programmed to keep paying those 40-of-a-kinds A LOT. So if there's

watch the machines for awhile and see how others do with them first.
