This has nothing to do with VP, but the following illistrates to a
tee what our valley roadways have been seeing less of overall
population increases:safe and curtious drivers! This morning exiting
onto northbound Boulder Hwy. leaving Sams Town (after another 0.25
JOB multistrike whooping!)I began entering the left turn lane on
Boulder and Flamingo. As I got into the lane, a relatively common
driving situation arose: the arrow was in mid-yellow with the car in
front of me in mid turn. No big deal for me, I'll just wait for the
next green arrow. As Im coming to a stop, I get that ominous feeling
I think many of you are familiar with: the vehicle behind you riding
your butt so close they're practically rumaging through your trunk!
Apparently an older woman in some sort of mid-size SUV felt I missed
the yellow and now she was being forced to wait out a red arrow
unnessarily. I guess she failed to notice that at best there was a
second or two before it went red and I was still a good 20 yards
from getting into the turn. I dont like being in the intersection
with a red arrow, thats just my rule. Man was she irrate! . . . .
Yes, driving is great fun these days - everywhere!
Gallagher (comedian) had a routine about how "everybody knows you're supposed to get three cars thru on the yellow" and how they "should" line up and go - very cute.
I've actually been hit by someone who assumed I was going to "go" in such a situation, and was gunning it so they could make it too.
One of my favorite tricks I learned from watching a NYC taxi driver - someone behind him was honking, so at the next light, when it turned green, he just sat there until it was yellow, counted a beat or two, and then zipped through the yellow leaving the "honker" behind.
I used it once myself. My other favorite is when someone honks, to wave at them like I think they are saying "hello" to me.
Of course, with road rage and gun-carrying drivers, I use these passive-agreessive countermeasures much more sparingly now than 10 or 20 years ago.
