Joel,
You are 100% correct in your assessments. Mohegan USED to be a fair deal in terms of benefits given back to their players. But the oft-documented invasion of the bean counters made it a VP wasteland. Combined with the total incompetence of my assigned host, it was easy to make the switch over to Foxwoods.
Although Foxwoods increased the required coin-in to earn a point, their policies have not been totally anti-player. The reduction of max coin needed to get full RF's on DDB from 10 or 25 to 5 was a very welcome and positive change. They have increased the number of VP machines, and actually upgraded to new, more ergonomic machines. I also like the fact that the earn period was lengthened from every six months to yearly. I can play on my schedule, not theirs. I also find the hosts to be friendly and helpful, and much more proactive in making sure I know about upcoming events. Finally, even the "second-tier" New Year's Eve Party was far and away better than the last Sachem/high Sagamore NYE party I went to at Mohegan.
The only reasons anyone should have for stopping at Mohegan now are to use up existing points, or if you are already headed to Foxwoods, and Mohegan happens to send you some FSP or comps or points that you can use while out there on your visit. Surprisingly, I still get a monthly mailer with some free rooms mid-week, and the same level of FSP I used to get as a Sagamore.

In my opinion, you do have to wonder why.
Mohegan offered a fair deal and nothing more. Good VP, reasonable comps, points etc. Nothing different than what you can get from many other Casinos. They hired some number crunchers with the objective improving the bottom line who drove many players to Foxwoods, A/C or to not play at all.
After moving in March, I returned to New England for the holidays and wanted to play the pick-em at Mohegan. Since I am a winner and my wife a 'loser', she was able to get a comped Sky Suite and lounge access. While I enjoyed being back there is something so distasteful about risking thousands of dollars of your money and then having to pay for a hamburger or breakfast or whatever. This is something that someone who is not a player will never understand and why if I still lived in New England why I would very rarely play at Mohegan.
Tried Foxwoods. They have improved their VP including putting 9/6 DDB on their bartops. Paid for the room but earned enough points to cover the room, all meals, purchases from the gift shop, gas and I still have points left. In my opinion it is hard to see why anyone would go to Mohegan when Foxwoods is offering a much better deal.
