The Secret World of Video Poker Progressives

Outstanding is an understatement, Frank! It'll go down in video poker history as an all time classic. I now suffer no delusions of grandeur that I'm gonna write a pro secrets book. I'm a little older than you. I remember The Who not wanting to play behind Jimmie Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival. Well, I'm not gonna play behind you either.

First, I cut right to the chase and went to Chapter 7. Then I went to Chapter 9. The similar situations we've been in is eerie, especially at Harvey's up at the Lake. I'm gonna get myself bogged down in the math chapters next. This old dog ain't too old to learn some new math tricks.

I developed a lot of my own technique but I started out by reading, reading, reading everything video poker that was available back in the day. I started out with Paymar's Precision Play and Best of Video Poker Times. I learned poker and keno math from John Scarne. I went from there.

One time I was in the downstairs bar at the Regency in Laughlin. A man at the bar asked me what I did for a living.

"I'm a professional gambler" I said. He gave me the typical cynical stare that so many have given me when I give them the honest answer. He thought for awhile then asked

"What does it take to be a professional gambler?" he asked.
"Education" I said. He busted out laughing.
"Education" he laughed as he walked away.

He was your typical skeptic. Since he can't do it, it can't be done.

More later, but....Yo, Frank! You better let me play the machine this time. I'm due-er than you. And don't forget to save the rubber band.

Thought some of you might find this of interest.

Frank, did you happen to play dollar 10/7 Double Bonus Four-Play on an old Oddyssey machine at the Pioneer in Laughlin? I think it was about 2002. The guy I seen playing that machine looked an awful lot like you. Whoever that guy was I was told he flopped a royal and it killed the play.

No I don't believe that was me. I played Jake's Jacks, 678 JKR, Flush Attack, and the Pioneer Progressives in Laughlin...not much else.

I had not seen your nice review of my book until today. For some reason I missed it. Thank you.

My favorite "Due" fact is that if one is "due" and they still don't hit a jackpot, they become, "Due Due". Careful on the pronunciation.

P.S. Oh and BTW: I'm still waiting for my In sequence heart Royal on the redraw to get out of hell.

What are Jake's Jacks, 678 JKR and why did they attract your play?

Pretty sure the 678 Joker was a 2-pair version that has been discussed here before. I can't find the thread. I'm pretty sure Iguana was where I first heard of it from. I too would like to know more history on that. Apparently it was like a 1.5% game by itself, if I remember. Who dealt it? Was it Bally?

The Jake's Jacks I never heard of. Looking forward to hearing about that too. No doubt Mickey can fill us in.

It's been a while since Jake's Jacks have been seen. I played it
a bit at the Gold River in Laughlin and at Binion's in Las Vegas.

It was Bonus Poker with 200 coins for quad K's,Q's and J's
instead of 2's, 3's and 4's. As in Bonus Poker it was 400
for quad A's.

G'luck all,
Gamb00ler

678 JKR was the 102% return verity of 2-pair of better Joker that had less fluctuation than almost any other game I've ever played. They had dollars in Laughlin and it was easy money.

Jacks's Jacks was a verity of Bonus Poker where the Jacks paid 400, and the Kings, Queens, and Aces were the other bonus quads. They returned 99.9% and the Gold River had a 1% cash card and gave you a 150 coin bonus on any 4k, SF, or RF when you cashed your paycheck there. Maximum 1 check per day. I ran myself and 20 of my friends through there everyday for three months. It went well.

6-7-8 Joker is an IGT paytable.

Sigma Games. I sent them a Christmas Card to thank them. I also employed one of their test players that they used to determine game return.

That's how it was done in the old days...create a new game, then sit down some of your employees to play them for a few weeks and record the results. It was the bear skins and stone knives way of doing things but it was all they had at the time.

Lenny From wrote about the 6-7-8 Jokers in the early nineties. I remember cutting his strategy chart out of....I think it was Gaming Today. They had nickels in the Western down of 9th and Fremont. This was at a time when I still didn't know anything about video poker. But I remember seeing a quarter bank of 6-7-8 at Station Casino....and having to turn around and walk off because I didn't have the money to play.

The first good strategy card for 678 JKR was done by a NASA employee named Bradley Davis, who wrote a whole book on Joker Poker. We became friends.

I'm going to try to get him as a guest on my radio show.

Hey Frank, I have seen a Joker Wild version of Pickem on new Bally Game Makers. Can you offer any thoughts on it? I have not found anything anywhere. Thanks.

"Mastering Joker Wild video Poker" by Bradley Davis was the first gambling book I ever purchased back in 1990. I still have the first edition with all of the strategy cards intact. Seems like I used to play Joker Poker at the Showboat way back then. Talk about a blast from the past.
