Hi Mickey, I grew up in NJ where my great uncle subsidized his income
(funny, but I don't recall his other "job":)) as a numbers runner just outside of
NYC. As recently as 20 years ago, the daily "number" was based on the last
three numbers of the total mutual handle of the NY area thoroughbred track that
was racing at the time. I don't know if this changed as he's long deceased
and I've left for a sunnier climate.
I don't know what his piece was for this undertaking but with a 500:1 payoff
on a 1,000:1 odds game, there was plenty of juice to go around. A true
sucker bet for sure played more frequently I imagine by the OTB folks than the
Wall Street crowd. Then again, given the recent turn in the market and the
financial services sector, it's getting harder and harder to see what the real
sucker play is:)
