Because most people would have turned around and left. Never mind that all
of those would have been grateful for the "head's up" and appreciated the class
necessary to do that. Also, all the "suits" you referred to could have gone
around and hand-paid anyone under a certain amount (say, $20). But again,
that would have required class.
