The good, bad and ugly..

For those of you who are so sure East St. Louis is an unsafe place I would
have thought you would have recommended the Eades Bridge now open from adjacent
to the Arch grounds in downtown St. Louis almost directly to the Casino Queen
parking lot.
Of course none of you would recommend the Metro Link which has a stop right
at the Queen.

Regarding the Eads bridge, I agree, it is very quick and painless to
get to the Queen when approaching from the West, assuming you are
familiar with the territory.

For visitors traveling to STL from the west, there is no signage to
direct them off I-70 onto the Eads bridge.

From the east, they are directed through East St. Louis, and as I
said, one wrong turn and they would be in a part of town they would
rather not be in....

As far as the Metrolink goes, yes, it stops at the Queen, but you
also have to walk about 200 yards through the parking lot from the
front doors of the casino to the platform to the ML. I would not
recommend doing this after dark.

As a 30+ year resident of St. Louis, yes, I'm sure that East St.
Louis is unsafe.

Clarification. There is no signage that would lead a visitor
approaching from the west to believe that taking the Eads bridge
would be the most direct route to the Queen.

...and the official crime statistics bear that out.

For 2001/2002 (the latest years for which statistics are posted), the Chicago Sun Times says the Most Reported Crimes per 100,000 Residents in the Illinois communities around St. Louis are:

2001
1. East St. Louis
2. Washington Park
3. Brooklyn

2002
1. Alorton
2. East St. Louis (2nd place by only a few percent)
3. Washington Park

PS By the way, in 2002 Brooklyn's crime dropped by 50% and Alorton's increased by 300%! Did they move all the X-rated establishments from Brooklyn to Alorton???
