The Fremont Street Commando does Nowhere, Nevada

The Fremont Street Commando arrived in Nowhere, Nevada and checked into the Kokomo Kasino. He threw his gear in the room and headed to the casino floor. He walked up on a bank of slots, 20 machines in all, that were linked together. The name of the game was June's Cash (Johnny's Cash is probably already copyrighted). Ploppies were sprinkled around the bank playing away. He looked above the bank and there were three meters running. He automatically recognized it as a version of Acre's Gaming's Lucky Coin Bonus System.

The top meter had $627.51 in it. Just below the meter it said "Will go between $500 and $1000." The middle meter had $153.38 in it. Just below the meter it said "Will go between $100 and $200." The bottom meter had $63.94 in it and just below it said "Will go between $50 and $100."

"Okay" the Commando said. "Let's start reverse engineering this thing." He walked up to one of the machines and took a look. It was a nine line video slot, penny denomination, but you could bet up to 50 cents a line, for a max bet of $4.50. He backed off several feet and looked up at the meters again.

"Gee" he said. "I sure wish I could time those meters. Can't do that with all these people playing. Oh well, I'll just have to come back in the middle of the night when the bank ain't gettin' any action." But he stood there for awhile looking at the meters to see if they were traveling at the same speed. The bottom meter was running faster than the middle meter, and the middle meter was running faster than the top meter. "Three different speeds" he said to himself.

Then off he went to survey out the rest of the Kokomo....and then the Windchill Casino, where he found a copycat version of June's Cash called Barney Rubble's Stones. Then over to the Sunshine Casino where he found another bank of June's Cash. And finally over to the Fool's Gold Casino where he found the dollar 9/6 Jacks progressive with a strong meter. He stopped and railbirded the poker games along the way to see how tough or soft they were. Then he headed off to play video blackjack for the comp.

to be continued....

It got on to about 3 in the morning and the Commando headed back to the Kokomo. The casino was dead. No one was playing June's Cash. He stuck a bill in a machine and set the bet for one penny. He put the machine on turbo speed. "Okay" he said. "Let's do the bottom meter first." He started pecking the start button while watching the meter. As soon as the meter flipped one penny he started counting the games. At the count of 50 the meter flipped one penny. "Ooooh, that's a 2% meter" he said.

He did the same thing with the middle meter pecking away until it flipped one penny, then counting the games. At the count of 100 the meter flipped a penny. It was a 1% meter. He moved up to the top meter and repeated the process. It was a .5% meter.

He cashed the ticket out and headed back to the Windchill to get some steak and eggs at the Jamaican Grill. He got his order in then pulled out his pocket calculator and pocket notebook. Then he started talking to himself. The Commando is notorious for talking to himself. He's not an idiot. He just likes talking to himself.

"Okay, son. You gotta think this thing out. Nobody around here is gonna do it for you. Use you're head for something besides a hatrack. Ain't that what you're poor old daddy used to tell ya? Percentagwise those type of slots usually come in in the low to mid nineties. So I'm gonna lowball it and call it 90% overall payback. If I'm gonna make a mistake then the mistake is gonna favor me." Besides, the Windchill Casinos were known for better than average payback.

"Now" he said. "What's the great mystery about the Lucky Coin Bonus System?" From experience he knew that a meter was counting all the bets since the last time the lucky coin was bet. A Random Number Generator was selecting a coin number and whoever bet that coin number got what was in the meter. You didn't have to hit a pay to get the meter, just bet that coin number.

"Okay" he says. Let's do the bottom meter first." The paramets are $50 and $100. How much action does it take to drive the meter from preset to $100? It's a 2% meter so 50 X 50 = $2500 in action. How many pennies is that? 2500 X 100 = 250,000 pennies. A meter is counting all the coins bet since the last time the lucky coin was bet. If someone hits the meter at $77.53 that would mean the RNG chose coin number 137,650. 137,650/100 X 2% = $27.53. Add that to the preset money and you get $77.53.

His breakfast arrived. The Commando is a sucker for steak and eggs with a glass of unsweetened ice tea. He chowed down then tipped the girl off, grabbed the ticket, walked over to the cashier and handed her the ticket along with his slot card. She comped it off. He went outside and took the shuttle back to the Kokomo and his room.

The Commando wanted to finish the math up that night. He was laying in bed with his calculator and notebook but he just couldn't stay awake. He fell asleep and dreamed tremulous dreams of June's Cash.

to be continued....

The Commando woke up refreshed the next morning. He showered, shaved, put on some clean clothes and headed down to the Frappuccino of Love Expresso Shop for a cup of mud. She sat the coffee up and he handed her his slot card. She comped it off.

He grabbed a table, pulled out his calculator and notebook, then said to himself "Now, how much of the payback does the bottom meter represent?" He sipped on his coffee as he did the math. With everything being random the average hit would be $75. That's an extra $25 in the meter. It's a 2% meter so 25 X 50 = $1250 in action....$75/1250 = 6%.

He moved to the middle meter. The parameters are $100 and $200. Average hit is $150. That's an extra $50 in the meter. It's a 1% meter so 50 X 100 = $5,000 in action. 150/5000 = 3%.

He moved to the top meter. Parameters are $500 and $1000. Average hit is $750. That's $250 extra in the meter. It's a .5% meter so 250 X 200 = $50,000 in action. 750/50,000 = 1.5%.

"So" he says to himself. "The meters represent 10.5% of the payback. I lowballed the overall payback at 90%. So we'll subtract the 10.5% off and round it to 80%. That's means I'm racing against a 20% drop."

"Okay" he starts talking to himself again. "Let's see what a playable number is gonna look like. Let's start with $80. With everything being random the average hit would now be $90. How much action would that be? 10 X 50 = $500 in action. 90/500 = 18%. So 80% plus 18% is 98%. That would definitely be an overlay with the other meters throw in. But I need a better number. Let's try $85."

The average hit would now be $92.50. That's a $7.50 meter rise so 7.5 X 50 = $275. So 92.50/275 = 33.6%. "That's more like it" he mumbled. "So at $85 I would hold at least a 13% edge plus I'll be freerolling the middle and top meters, plus I'll be runnin' comp.

He moved to the middle meter and pinpointed the number $188. If he jumped in with the meter at $188 the expected hit would be $194. It's a 1% meter so 6 X 100 = $600 in action. So 194/600 = 32.33%. Adding the 80% to that and he would have at least a 12% edge, plus freerolling the bottom and top meters, plus running comp.

Now for the top meter. He pinpointed the number $970. If he jumped in at $970 the average hit would be $985. That's a $15 meter rise. It's a .5% meter so 15 X 200 = $3000 in action. 985/3000 = 32.8%. So at $970 he's holding at least a 12% edge plus freerolling the middle and bottom meters, plus running comp.

So now he knows his playable numbers are $85, $188, and $970. The Commando pocketed his calculator and notebook, grabbed his coffee and walked over to a machine. He loaded five $100 bills in it then cashed the ticket out. Then he loaded another five $100 bills in and cashed it out again. He stuck the tickets in his shir pocket. When he gets a play he doesn't want to waste time putting bills in the machine....and he doesn't want to run out of credits in the middle of the play giving the other players a better shot at the lucky coin. He's also gonna play two machines if he can.

It was early morning. The casino was dead. The Commando was headed to the Frappaccino of Love Espresso Shop. He spied the June's Cash bank and the middle meter was at $192. "I'm gonna be late for coffee this morning" he said. The only person on the band was a nice looking brunette. The Commando walked behind her and looked down to see she was betting 5 coins per line. She was playing on normal speed and when she hit the start button the symbols would start fall into place. Boop. Boop. Boop. Boop. Boop. When she hits a decent pay the credits start racking up. Blu. Blu. Blu. Blu. Blu.

She was only getting out 7 or 8 games a minute. She was betting in 45 coin blocks so she was only getting out about 300 coins worth of bets per minute.

The Commando went to the other side of the bank and sat down out of her sight. "Well, I'll give her a chance" he said. "I'll just play one machine." He stuck a ticket in, set the machine for max bet and turbo speed. He started tapping the start button as fast as he could. He kept tapping if he hit a good line pay to keep the credits zipping up as fast as possible. He was betting in 450 coins blocks and getting out about 40 games per minute. He was cranking out about 18,000 coins worth of bets per minute. Who do you think is the favorite to bet the luck coin in this spot? The brunette or the Commando?

The Commando snapped the meter off at $193.84. He hit the cashout button, grabbed the ticket and headed to the Frappaccino of Love Espresso Shop.

If you ever hear the Fremont Street Commando talking about "advantage slots" this is some of the stuff he's talking about.

I call it Lucky Coin Bonus System. Peter Listern calls it "Mystery Slots" or "Mystery Progressives." Whatever the name I describe how it works and how to analyze it in a fictional story in this thread. I was actually writing about the slot progressives called "Coyote Cash" on the Peppermill properties in Wendover
