The Commando does Juneau

Welcome to Taxington, er, Washington.

I'm holed up in Seattle for a couple of days. I'm on my way up to Juneau, Alaska for a family reunion. In Montana we don't have any sales tax. If the meal on the menu says $14 then that is what you pay. Not so here in Washington. That $14 meal here carries a tax of about $1.32. Highway robbery!

Three meals a day and I'm paying about $5 a day in tax just to eat. Who invented this scam?

Washington doesn't have an income tax. They raise the money through a stiff sales tax. I can see it as much more equitable though. The lower class doesn't get to escape a tax like this if they buy anything.

I could support a national sales tax in lieu of income tax. Just don't make it 9.4% like Washington.

That's true of restaurant meals here in Wisconsin (5.5%). However,
unprepared foods from the grocery store are exempt from sales tax.

Best Regards,

Mike

No F-bombs! Unbelievable.

I flew between Alaska and Sea Tac a lot in the old days. When you got in a bar in the Alaska Airlines terminal all you heard was F this, F that, F'ing this, F'ing that.

I didn't hear one F bomb this time. It looks like the Alaskans have finally become civilized.

The cruise ships are in town. I forgot it was going to be tourist season when I got here. They've moved the Red Dog Saloon down the street to where its closer to the dock. Its just pure tourist trap now.

There's 4 ships here, the Zaandam, Norwegian Princess, Ruby Princess, and the other one is out in the channel so can't read the name. Have any of you been on either of these ships?

Correction. Its not the Norwegian Princess but the Norwegian Sun.

NCL is one of my least favorite cruise companies.

The weather forecast for Juneau today is rain. The weatherman here is the most accurate in the nation. All he has to do is predict rain and he will be right 90% of the time.

Here in Phoenix the weatherman predicts "Sunny and Hot" 95% of the time!
So far this year we had 2.48 inches of rain at our house....

Also works for weathermen in Vegas for sunshine. Average is about 362 days a year.
