The Cell From Hell

Howdy

Ah yes. What would the world be without them? Let's cut right to the heart of the matter. During gaming, they can be VERY annoying. I am sure we all have had been on the receiving end(lol) of some bad experiences while trying to have an audience with The Royal Family.

Of course a level of tolerance is indicated at times. For instance, some would want to share a joyous moment if they hit a jackpot. Very understandable. A brief call would be in order..heck even two brief calls would not bother me.

In fact; any BRIEF call is okay as long as the number of them is within reason. The question arises what is a reasonable amount of time that one would converse on the telly phone of the portable type while seated or standing close to a VP machine?

I think anything over two minutes violates the sacred domain of good taste and enters the over populated territory of rudeness .

Add in a loud grating voice and thoughts unpleasant may enter that gambler's focused mind.

So how do you feel about this . Should they be allowed in a gaming place at all? What is a decent amount of time to converse..if at all? Should you address the issue with the perp ( I love that word?) Are you man enough?

Feelings..nothing more then feelings................

I'll consider entertaining a ban on cell phones in casinos after we
throw out all the smokers ;-). Given all the noises, distractions,
and poisonous gases that are present in a casino, cell phone
conversations are at the bottom of my list of annoyances. In fact I
can't even recall sitting by anyone in recent memory who spent an
inordinate (if any) amount of time using one for a call.

Speaking of cell phones I'm looking at possibly moving up from the
basic features to more of a smart phone. Aside form other
organizational features, I thought it may also be useful for gambling.
For example all the recent talk of strategy cards got me to thinking
about risks of having such strategies stored electronically and
available via the phone. You could basically have any conceivable
strategy available at your fingertips. Anyone used a phone for this
purpose? Also would be helpful for updating gambling logs, taking
notes, analyzing pay tables, using if for music etc. I think some VP
training SW may also be available for some systems. I'd be interested
in hearing about experiences of anyone who has used a smart phone as a
PDA for gambling activities and any of the benefits or drawbacks of
such a proposal.

Thanks!

Grumpy, picture this: Sunset Station Buffet, 5pm, weekday. George and I are sitting trying to enjoy dinner. Behind us is a man on his cell, he had a grating, whiny voice. He is trying to explain to someone that it is not his fault a piece of machinery is not working "it was fine when I left there". This goes on for our entire meal. I finally say I have had enough of his office problems and leave. When G. catches up with me he is all smiles. George loves a confrontation, and usually it is about cell phones "Lady, we just enjoyed your converstaion telling us all about your daughter's drug problem". Anyway, on this occasion, he confronted the man with "my wife and I did not appreciate spending our dinner hour at your office". The man said to get out of his f'ing face, that he was an employee of this f'ing casino, that he didn't appreciate the f'ing interferenceand if G. would step outside, he would beat the f'ing s--- out of him. G, being big and astute, in a loud voice, mimicked the man's responses - I am sure making him twice as embarassed, frustrated, etc. and causing the nearby diners to ignore the fact that they did not have enough gumption to tell the guy to shut up. Finally the buffet manager showed up, the small man says to him "I don't know what his problem is" and fled the buffet. The manager was all apology, saying the man was an employee of a vendor, but would not give G. the name of the employer. All the manager wanted to do was make the whole situation go away by "buying your dinner". G. told him that he had been verbally assaulted that buying our dinner was not necessary as we get it for half points, what was necessary was to post a sign saying cell phones should be prohibited or limit call lengths. The manager said he could not do that, anymore than they cannot ask parents of small, screaming children to vacate until the child is happy once again. We all have to live with people who do not belive in making the world a better place, sort of like the mentality of Wall Street - it is all theirs and no one else can dictate the way they do business. That is the end of my rant, but I agree with you 100% and yes, G. is man enough to confront most cell phone abusers.

  Cheers!

A person using a cell phone at the same voice level as a normal conversation isn't much different than that person talking to the player next to him or her. The problem is when people talk on the phone at a louder voice than usual. This is discourteous, but unlike some one smoking next to you which is dangerous, the cell phone being used obnoxiously is a nuisance.

Call over your server and ask to be reseated letting him or her know why and make sure the rude caller overhears the request. If they get enough requests like this perhaps real action may get taken. If you can figure out who this vendor is don't be afraid to call that business and report how one of their employees spoiled your buffet.

SB,

First, a disclaimer: IANAL (which you already know!). Now, buddy, are
you absolutely INSANE??? Why not just cart a laptop into the casino
to "help" you play?

Seriously, SB, I believe you'd run a high risk of running afoul of
the "device laws" on the books in Nevada (and, as far as I know,
every other gaming jurisdiction) if you brought an electronic device
that COULD be used to analyze the game on the spot.
