I have agreed to to teach my wife the strategy for FPDW. She now
plays 9/6 JOB or 8/5 bonus poker exclusively. I have the applicable
strategy card and WIN Poker available as training aids, but would
appreciate input on the best method to introduce her to FPDW.
This doesn't directly address your question concerning how to approach
the task of teaching her the game, however, I recommend that you
consider use of Frugal Video Poker for this purpose.
For my wife, one of the more frustrating aspects of WinPoker is that
in most games there are infrequent penalty card situations where an
alternate hold is stronger mathematically than the hold dictated by
standard strategy. In these situations, WinPoker flags an error.
Mind you, these represent true, nominal cost errors, but having them
flagged frustrates the hell out of her. It's possible to set the
error threshold in WinPoker to largely ignore these errors, but it's a
hit and miss process and risks ignoring true strategy errors.
In the case of Frugal VP, when practice is in "strategy mode", only
inferior holds that deviate from basic strategy are flagged as errors.
In addition, the strategy chart for a game can be called up on the
screen with a single key click - an extremely convenient feature not
available in WinPoker.
I consider it to be the better learning tool by far.
