Taxis and tipping

The absolute most direct route would be down Swenson to Paradise and down Paradise to where it meets Main Street and then it is straight to the hotel.

The route that you now take through the Cal is as safe as it can get while walking.

Cab fare should be $35 using the following web site and using Union Plaza as destination.
This route uses I-15 which is quicker but longer .

Hi, I have been lurking - reading, learning, going to suggested websites, etc. I must say this is a great group!! I wish I had found this group months ago!

I do have a question on the taxi topic. I will be coming in this Saturday to Las Vegas with a friend and we will be staying downtown 2 nights and then on the strip 2 nights. I have never gone from the airport to downtown before, Does anyone know, approximately, what should I expect the fee to be? That being said, is there a definite route to tell the driver we would like him to take? Also, is there one of the shuttles that go downtown and would that be less expensive. I know they can take longer, but that doesn't bother me if the savings is substantial.
Thanks for your input/suggestions.

We are staying at Main Street Station. Should we give ourselves a "curfew" to safely return back to MSS after Fremont Street on Sat/Sun nights? Or are we a little nervous for nothing? I have cut through the Vegas Club through their garage and then across the street to the Cal and on to MSS, but have never stayed downtown overnight, making "that" trip late at night. I've read things both ways - I don't want our trip to have an incident!

Your response "The route that you now take through the Cal is as safe

very safe. We really wanted to enjoy Fremont Street on the 4th, but
want to be safe also. Hence the curfew question. Not that that's a
guarantee, but it can't hurt. Any thoughts/suggestions??

Thanks for the responses about the trip from the airport - think
these two cheap gals from the Midwest will be taking the shuttle
downtown! We'll save the difference in fares for something else!!

It is a fairly short walk across the street from MSS to the Cal and if you feel nervous, I'm sure security at either would be glad to stick their head out the door and watch you make your way across the street.

I stayed at the Plaza in January and did most of my playing at MSS. Streets are mostly deserted after around midnight or so. Being a nightowl, I wandered from the Plaza to MSS at all hours and while there were a few scruffy characters waiting at the bus stop between them, I didn't feel threatened at all walking alone. Of course, I'm a big, burly, biker-looking old fart and have deliberately cultivated that image to keep people from realizing what an old softie I really am.

And then there is the pedestrian bridge that goes over Main St between MSS & the Cal, saves you having to walk out side.

Another tip that I use either late at night or if it's hot outside. If you are on Fremont St & want to get to MSS......go into Binion's & go thru the casino to the far back left side of the casino where the poker tables are. Go out that back door & cross over to the Cal. Then walk thru the Cal to the escalator to the 2nd floor. Take the bridge over Main St & you are into MSS without having to walk outside in the heat or late hours.
