Tax charged when using comp dollars at Harrah's properties in this situation:

The following is the policy at Caesar's:

When I use room service, I sign to have them charge it to the room.

When I check out at Diamond services, I tell them to use my comp
dollars to pay for it.

They never remove the tax. I've tried to get it removed on 2 occasions.

The 1st time the clerk was familiar with the situation and told me
that she knows the tax is normally removed for comps but that "the
system" doesn't allow it.

The 2nd time both the clerk and the supervisor looked at me like I was
from another planet when I told them that comps are not taxed, and it
was obvious that I was wasting my time.

A related situation happens at the Palms. I haven't read all the posts
in this thread so perhaps this has already been mentioned by someone
else.

Last night Shirley and I went to Little Buddha's to redeem a $50 food
comp from my monthly mailer. The bill came to $52 before tax and $56
(rounded) after. I expected my card to be charged for $2 but instead it
was charged for $6.

Upon inquiry, I was told that Little Buddha's was not owned by the Palms
and so tax was charged. Had we received the same bill at Garduno's,
24/7, or the Bistro Buffet, the tax would have "disappeared". But at the
restaurants not owned by the Palms, the tax IS charged, even for comps.

This has been standard at Harrah's for as long as I can remember.
Unless you pay with points at the time of purchase, tax is added. You
can pay the tax with your points, but you end up using more points to
do that.
For example:
You go to the the Buffet and pay for 2 adults. If you pay with your
points right then, no taxes are added. If you charge it to your room,
taxes will be added and you will have to pay the tax with either
points or cash/credit.

This is one of the reasons why it can be beneficial to pay with points
instead of charging to your room.

Take Care,
Mark

Even if tax were not charged on the $50 'comp,' shouldn't tax be
charged on the $2 (since it's not a 'comp')?

It has been my experience that GVR does NOT charge tax when using
points to pay for a meal and I've eaten my share there!
