Taping of BJ Tournament

The second season of the World Series of BJ (WSOB) will be taping this week
at the Nugget. (Airs in January-Feb. on GSN - the formerly named Game Show Network) I don't know all the participants yet but I know there are
at least 3 from one or both of the lists: Viktor Nacht of
www.advantageplayer.com, Henry Tamburin of http://www.smartgaming.com/, and yours truly. Some of the BJ pros that were in the first series will be returning, including Anthony Curtis, Ken Smith, Stanford Wong. Celebrities include Joe Maloof, George's brother and Rene, Celine's husband. 40 players are competing for $500,000 prize package (5 players at 8 tables first round). Everyone gets at least $500 if they don't survive beyond the first round. First prize is $250,000.

Taping is open to the public - in the Golden Nugget Pavilion: Tues (9th) taping sessions start at 2 p and 6:30p. Wed. - 10:30 a. and 2:30 p. Thursday - 10:30 and 3p. Friday - 10a, 3p, and 6p. Sat. 9a, 1p, and 4p.

My game taping is on Tuesday afternoon but I don't know which session. If you want to see me, you better come the first day - do you know how intimidating it is to be studying the book - and know the author is also in the tournament!!!!!

I am used to gambling when I have a lot of experience and practice under my belt so I am confident with my skill level. This week I feel like a lamb in a jungle of vicious man-eating (and woman-eating - they aren't particular) predators. I am hanging onto the skirts of Lady Luck like never before!!!!!!

Why does this bother you? You should realize that luck will be a
far, far greater determinant of who will win than skill. They only
play, what, forty hands? Would you feel confident in prevailing in a
VP tournament where everybody played forty hands--PERIOD--even if
your opponents were all rank novices?
Let's face it, if you and Joe Brilliant are at the table, and you
hold a 20, and he holds a 15, he may play that 15 the best possible
way, but I still would rather have your hand.
BTW, this raises the question--how DID you get invited, since by
your own admission, you're not a BJ "pro" or anything resembling it?
Your "frugal fame" would be irrelevant in this case, I should think.

Jean, Good Luck in the tournament; I'm looking forward to watching. The number one rule you should remember is : shamelessly plug your books constantly. Follow Bill O'Reilly's example and preface each sentence with the title and where they can be purchased. I would proceed as follows: " In my book "The Frugal Gambler" that you can get from my web site; I recommend always thinking before you bet, therefore my bet is one dollar."

To answer some questions that some of you asked - that I'm allowed to do. I can't tell the actual results. We signed our life away to keep it a secret. But I can say that I did better than I expected, but not as well as I had hoped!!! And I don't think I made any really dumb moves.

There were only 25 hands - so, yes, luck is a BIG factor. But it would help if I could count down chips and do math in my head a little better!!!!! I was chosen to play because I am a " colorful character." See how getting old is sometimes a plus!!! Seriously, I was chosen partly because I am a "celebrity," albeit a very minor one in my estimation - and well-known from many other TV appearances. There were other real celebrity figures. I may have been the oldest person in the tournament. Not sure if Stanford Wong is a bit older than I am - we are near the same age. And I'm not a complete BJ dope. We played BJ for about 6 years before we took up VP, counting cards, going on many junkets, etc. And I did win a BJ tournament at the Rio in June, winning $20,000. But I don't play in too many BJ tournaments - and some of the others are tournament pros. However, there were others who were probably not as experienced as I am.
