Several times we've taken a Harrahs property offer and left without playing
without penalty. However generally this was at places where I normally do
play a LOT. However, recently I was at Harrahs Vegas for an offer of a room
and cash. As it happened, I did intend to play, but an emergency came up when
I arrived at the casino from home, so I had to cancel the room and leave, but
I stopped to pick up the cash.
My host called later that day to complain hotly that I couldn't do that, and
if I did it again, the next time I would be charged (charged for room or for
the gift or both, I don't know).
Anyway, next time I went for another offer, Macy's, I did play. And as it
happened, hit for the $20,000 jackpot I mentioned recently. Odd but true - my
host's insisting "you Must Must play" led to me taking a bunch of money away
from Harrahs!
So my best guess is that if you are a good player, 1 trip without play isn't
going to be charged. But if you are a tiny play, or do this a couple of
times in a row, you could be charged. Hopefully they will warn you in advance.
Certainly, if you go to check out and see you are going to be charged, you
might be able to say "Im checking out, but I'm going to play now" - and get the
checkout delayed while you go to play!
Note some offers do come with a specific notation (in fine print on the back
of the offer, usually) saying something like - "4 hours of play required."
or "play consistent with your usual average play required" or somesuch. For
example I've gotten Planet Hollywood offers with the second sort of message
during a shopping card giveaway. Presumably if you don't follow those
requirements, you may not get your gift card.
For something like Harrah's policy of saying (for example) - complimentary
rooms provided (where available) for 7 Star members, they won't charge if you
don't play. However if you do this a lot, you may find it hard to find an
"available" room at all the next time you go to that place. Some friends have
told me this was the case when they overused their "complimentary" rooms
without any play.
