You are taking a much too simplistic view of it. This was a management decision. If they thought it out completely I cannot say as I'm not privy to their decision making. But I do know a lot of people that work in the casino industry and have no doubt they are trying to improve their bottom line without removing all their customers.

Casino management, generally, are not stupid people. They are well aware that a change will cause a loss of some customers. However, they are also aware that a small loss in customers will be made up by the extra hold of those that do not leave. If they really wanted to be pigs about it, they would of lowered the pay tables even more, like the strip. By lowering the tables only one notch, they will be losing, what I like to say, is the bottom rung of the customer ladder. These are also the same people that generally try to milk the casino for anything they can get. The result (the casino hopes) is that the overall hold will remain the same while not having to give away everything to get it, thus the bottome line is improved.

It is possible, though usually I have the opposite problem...

OK... I guess in theory everything a casino does is supposed to
contribute to the bottom line.

Hmmm, would the "bottom rung" customer be the one that loses the
least money to them? I would like that to be me please;-) Let me
put it to you this way... The thrust of your "rant" and several
other posts recently contain the idea that the recent changes at
Suncoast were due to players who "milked the sytem for all it was
worth" and "helped kill it." I will side step the issue of how a
customer who is acting ethically and legally can abuse a system put
in place by the casino. Have you considered the possibility that the
decision to downgrade paytables/comps was made independent of the
actions of VP players, advantage and non-advantage? I imagine these
decisions can be made for many reasons --Change in strategy, change
in management or internal politics, change in goals, external
financial pressures. I don't know. I can only speculate, but I know
Coast has recently made a sizeable investment in Orleans. I recall
an article in a local LV Paper in which management stated that
Suncoast was so profitable it paid for itself well ahead of
projections. I may be wrong but I seem to remember that Coast beat a
hasty retreat from an IPO recently as well. While vp players may
like to think of themselves as a force large casinos fear, there are
a lot of other things going on in the world.
