Just got back from Tahoe. Quite an interesting day.
About 1 PM we drove over Kingsbury Grade and parked in
Minden, at the bottom of the Carson Valley side of the pass.
We got on our bikes to ride to Markleeville for lunch. We ended
up stopping in Woodfords instead (not advised - while the
deli in Markleeville is excellent, the Woodfords deli sucks
rocks). The reason for the earlier stop was that our progress
was muted by headwinds averaging 15-20 MPH with much faster
gusts. I told Jill not to sweat the return as we would get a great
tailwind.Inside the Deli, they were chatting about a fire in Markleeville
the day before. Someone came in and said "Did you hear about the
fire at Meyer's Grade?">>>
Thanks for the on the spot report about the Tahoe fire.
Regarding returning to Sacramento from Minden, know that there are several
alternatives but the best one would have been to return to heading S on Hwy 88
which would take you through Woodforde again & go all the way to Jackson,
head NW on 49, then W on 16 which goes to Sacramento. This is probably about the
same or a little more mileage than 50 but with a lot less traffic & the
climbs & canyons aren't so steep.
