switching machines when seemingly on a losing streak

LOL - my thoughts exactly.

As an aside, I cannot comprehend why someone who believes the machines are
often not random would put their money at risk (other than the amount of money
they would pay for pure recreation).

the trick is to find the good machines and avoid the bad machines
paytables, player tracking, malfunctions, sticky keys, glare, gaffing
...
they may all look like the same machine, but at today's levels of
complexity, they most certainly are not

All other things being equal, it is better for the player to play the
least random game possible -- assuming there is no cheating. I want
a machine to get stuck in non-random hot and cold modes; because I'll
ride them when their hot, and ditch them when their cold. When I
play a table game where the dealer controls the element of chance, I
look for the one that's the most simple, consistent, robotic, ston-
faced, and monotonous. I want non-random patterns to develop -- and
then bet more.

Right on, brother!

Just about everything that most of us experience in Las Vegas is in
the realm of small number statistics. Streaks are a part of the
game, even in the "most random" of events (what ever "most random"
means...it is either random, or it is not). Most of us can never be
around long enough in Las Vegas to know. We have to take something,
or somebody, at their word and hope for the best and be willing to
lose.

You will, but the same pattern will not repeat over and over again.

Streaks are inherent in randomness, however consistent patterns over
time are not. Of course, this may require a lot of hands to determine.

Of course, you assume it's impossible to detect a non-random machine
so don't even try. However, the VLTs in WA state are just such
machines and it took me less than 1 hour to figure that out when I
first played them years ago. The "give away" on the machine that I
was playing is that the two pair combinations always ended up in the
same spots. If I had assumed they were random then I would never had
noticed ...

I once had a long streak where I hit unsuited 2345 for a straight by
drawing the ace about 1/3 of the time on a particular kind of
machine. It finally ended and went back to normal distribution. As it
turned out this was a streak, however, if it had continued for
longer, the rate of hit been higher, or other anomalies appeared,
then I would probably have concluded the machine was non-random.

Keep in mind that it is possible to have short term periods of less
than perfect randomness in a long term random sequence of numbers
generated by software algorithm.
