I don't consider this a great stay offer. I like the Suncoast rooms but if I'm not going to stay at a place and play somewhere else I'd like it to be closer to other casinos. The Suncoast is close to the Rampart and not too far from AC West but no other large casinos are very close. The inconvenience and gas money would preclude me from using this offer. Currently some of the Stations properties have online specials as cheap or cheaper than this one and they have full pay video poker. I'm sure there are other hotels which also beat this offer by a wide margin.

I just returned last week from my latest trip to Vegas and here are my most
significant observations....

1. Main Street Station - No changes here to speak of , and I am very happy
with that. Scratch card breakdown...
$2 - 31 tickets
$3 - 16 tickets
$5 - 7 tickets
Average value of $2.68, but more importantly still works out to about %0.5
in additional cashback, which with regular cashback puts MSS at %0.6 ,
still among the best.

2. Stratosphere - With their new Slot club amalgamation with the two Arizona
Charlies, this now becomes a better play. Set up the Stratosphere as your
home Casino and play at AZ where there is a much greater variety of good VP,
and still get credit at the Strat which has a better hotel. I think with
the reasonable mail offers from the Strat, this may become a good play for
visitors.

3. Arizona Charlies Decatur - They have reduced the number of FP Joker
machines, but still have a good amount of 10/7/80 db machines and FP AA, and
a fair number of FP deuces. One must be very careful which machines they
play as the slot club points earned, can vary greatly from machine to
machine.
I ate breakfast one day at Yukon Jacks, this has to be the biggest overlay
in Las Vegas. I had Steak and eggs for 3 or 4 bucks, served in a very nice
room, and it came with like a whole fruit salad accompaniment. I was very
impressed, and there was no line up like at the sourdough.

4. Went to the Suncoast to cash in my points and was surprised by the large
crowd there (it was a Sunday) . It looks to me like p____g off the good VP
players was a good move.

That's been one of my contentions more recently at early reports that
players haven't budged from Suncoast. I gave most players
considerably more credit back in January. Looks like they took a page
out of Harrah's playbook.

And I stick by my concern about the effect it will likely have on the
other locals. I don't know how they could fail to take a clue here.
Whether accurate or not, there have been too many reports of floor
managers who report that hold for play on more generous machines
serves up marginal profit after cb and comps are considered.

Castaways seemed to be moving in this direction a few months ago,
although it's reported more recently that they've restored some decent
plays (no FPDW to my knowledge though).

And as I've said, I fail to see how these downgrades won't relieve
pressure on strip casinos and that we'll see some inventory
deterioration there as well. LVH comes most prominently to mind.

Hey, I've admitedly been unduly an alarmist in the past. But I'll
keep my expectations dim for the time being.

Agreed, the Suncoast (as far as I can tell) still seems pretty crowded. On the other hand, my impression is that the Gold Coast and Orleans have lost quite a bit of business. I'm guessing the difference is due to the Suncoast lacking any real Summerlin competition, whereas GC and Orleans patron have plenty of other choices nearby.

On the other hand, the drop-off (assuming my vision is not obscured by wishful thinking on my part) may have nothing to do with FPVP. Coasts also drastically reduced their frequency of double-point days and other promos, and soured their local's mailings. And upped the price of their buffets and restaurants. And slashed discretionary comps by hosts. Come to think of it, I can't think of anything they HAVEN'T tried lately to drive off business. Maybe their next step will be to shut off the air-conditioning, or string barbed-wire around the perimeter.

I'm sure all this cost-cutting has improved their bottom line, for now. But you'd think that it will hurt them in the long run. Time will tell.
