Strange habits of VP players

The earlier thread about the strange "possible cheat" who repetitively
fed and cashed out at a machine until it jammed or ran out of paper
(with little or no actual play) brought to mind some other strange
and / or amusing actions that I've observed from other players. None
of what's listed below is really malicious or anything like that, it's
just so .... illogical. Perhaps someone else has an explanation for
these actions?

1. Big win = cash out and move: This action is so common, there must
be a rule about it posted somewhere. It has a distinct sound (the
extended ringing of credits adding up, quickly followed by the
clanging of the cashout ticket.) And I'm aware that some machines
spit out tickets automatically past a certain credit level - I'm not
talking about that. Whenever these players get a big hand (typically
some kind of quad), they immediately cash out and move to another
machine. Another big hand - and they move again. I suppose they
figure each machine is only good for one decent payout per day???

2. Cash out and re-feed: This is similar to the player in
the "cheater" post, except these players are actually playing the
machine. They have an endless supply of small denomination bills,
which they feed into the machine just one bill at a time. After
several minutes they cash out, then feed the machine another bill.
Gradually they replace a big wad of small bills with a big wad of
small cash out tickets. Maybe this is some sort of voodoo money
management technique? This habit is especially frustrating if you are
waiting on the one machine they are playing, since you are falsly
tricked into thinking they are getting ready to leave.

3. Big money - short coin. I can (sort of) understand why a tourist
might play one or two coins if they don't know any better and they
think they're being frugal. But I have also seen someone put heavy
play a dollar 5 play game, at 4 coins per hand, on all 5 lines! What
the heck?? If someone can afford to play $20 per spin, they should be
able to afford $25 per spin and get the bonus for the royal. This one
I really don't get, unless they think the royal won't hit if they are
playing 5 coins. Or maybe this is some sort of ill-advised W2-G
avoidance method.

4. The "never say die" multiline player. These players keep
hitting "max bet" even when their credits get too low to fully fund
the machine. First they dwindle down to partial coins on all lines,
and then eventually to one coin on partial lines, until they finally
run down to 0 credits. Like #2, this can also be very frustrating to
watch if you're waiting on that one particular machine. I once saw
someone pounding away all night long on a dollar 10 play machine, and
when they finally got a big taxable hand (dealt low quads with a
kicker), the display showed this really strange jackpot total. Of
course what happened is they had run too low on credits and the hands
were only partially funded.

5. The 1,2,3,4,5 player. These players cycle through all the various
coin options, using some obscure money management formula.
Occasionally, they'll get what they deserve, which is a short coin
Royal. Heh,heh,heh...

yeah I did that once when I was in college----you should have seen the casino employees laugh at my 4 coin royal!

this actually works on 50/100 play - the machine does the right thing.
if you have 4/5 of a bet remaining and hit max bet, it will bet 4/5 of
the hands at max coin, rather than betting all the hands with four
coins. i refer to this as "circling the drain".

the first video poker i ever played was 50-play, and i was pretty
annoyed the first time i was on a 5-play machine, got low, hit max
bet, and got stuck with a bunch of short-coin hands... fortunately i
had more money to feed in so i could top off the bet.

3. Big money - short coin.

when i was at palazzo last week, surveying the wreckage of the $25
machines, i noticed that at least two of them had last been played by
someone playing three or four coins. why on earth they didn't just
play full coin on a $5 or $10 machine, i have no idea...

cheers,

five
