Some points occur to me - obviously stolen truck should be reported
immediately to the police. No doubt valet parking garage has lots of video
surveillance - which should be checked by police to determine if this was an inside
job. (This should have been done immediately since surveillance tapes may only
last 1-7 days - I don't know).
Secondly, despite disclamers, any garage or other facility that takes
custody of your car has certain obligations to keep it safe from harm. A lawyer
should be contacted. Presumably your buddy's car insurance firm should be
contacted and they would procede to find a lawyer and file claims for you if
necessary.
Anyone having property stolen from inside a casino, hotel, or for that
matter - any properties should immediately report to police, report to security,
and demand that surveillance tapes be procured to try to find the culprits.
Depending on circumstances, the property you visit may have some obligations.
For example if you are sleeping in a room at a hotel and someone opens the
door in the night to rob you of your wallet, and uses a room key, surveillance
tapes could discover if this was a hotel employee. If so the hotel may have
some liability.
After any sort of robbery, immediately report theft to your auto or
homeowners insurance. I had a ring stolen, while I was out of state, and my
homeowners policy covered the replacement cost (after deductible) - though I did have
to produce some receipts (and photos) proving value. Insurance companies
will also want to have copies of your police report - so be sure to make one
and if possible get a copy - so you can turn that into your insurance company.
