I am 50K "status credits" away from Chairman status. Is it worth it to play another 50K to get it? Or are the benefits rather negligible?

Depends if you use the limo service, or Movie Box benefits, or ask for comps. There are no further discounts on food. Chairman is just for a few extra perks.
If you don't get those 50K the extra status points DO roll over to the next earning period, where you will probably make Chairman in the next 6 months.

I would say depends on what is your main property - but generally it is not worth - you may not get any extra comps because those are still discretionary - and more based on your numbers than your status.
