State of Kansas City Video Poker

Since the Hollywood Casino is set to enter the Kansas City
market this Friday, I thought it would be a good time to take a look around the
local video poker scene.

Argosy- As a quarter player, I have never spent much time at
the Argosy. The casino is nice, but the
gaming areas are very dark. The video poker
is unplayable except for the $1 Job 3 play in the high limit area. Argosy does offer multipliers each Thursday
and Sunday to help offset losses and may even make the $1 JoB a slight
advantage game.

Harrah’s- There is nothing playable at Harrah’s
whatsoever. There was a report of $5 9/6
JoB in the high limit area in June 2011, but it has since been removed if it
was there at all. The size of the video poker area continues to shrink as slots
have begun to be placed in the area nearest the parking garage entrance. The quarter 8/5 Double Double progressive was
out of service last night. I would be
almost impossible for a worse game to replace it; hopefully something better
will be installed.

Isle of Capri- The
99.95 Pick ‘Em remains for dollar players as well as the 9/6 JoB. The Pick ‘Em
is still an over 100% play with cashback and comps, although Isle comps are (in
my opinion) not very valuable. The dollar
progressive at the Pulse Bar with 9/5 JoB and 8/5 TB+ was removed in late 2011
and replaced with a second quarter progressive to match the other side of the
bar with games like 8/5 JoB. There has
been nothing playable at the quarter level since the Pick ‘Em was removed from
quarters over two years ago.

Ameristar- I do almost all of my quarter play at Ameristar,
although my play in 2011 was only about 15% of my 2010 play. 9/7 Double Bonus Progressives are still
available at two of the casino bars, along with 9/6 DDB and Illinois/LVAirport
Deuces. The progressives get to $1300
fairly regularly and I have seen them as high as $1800. Promotions for video poker players declined
significantly beginning in the Summer of 2010 as Ameristar moved multipliers
for slots only. Nearly all slot machines
are marked as 2x, 3x, 4x points every day in addition to your card level. Previous to the Summer of 2010, mystery
multipliers and emailed multipliers were available to all players. Additionally, drawings open to all players
have been eliminated. There are a number
of dollar progressives that could become positive once the jackpot has reached
the 8-10k range.

Does anyone have thoughts on the state of KC video poker
today?

Hollywood Casino will be a VP wasteland. Since the casino is "state owned" don't expect anything better than 8/5 JOB poker....I could be wrong but I've been to the other two State owned casinos and there are few VP machines and the pay tables are pretty bad.

You could very well be right about the new Hollywood being a VP wasteland. We did visit the one in Dodge City and the VP was pretty poor. However, Dodge City and the other do not have any competition which is not the case in KC. So the pay tables may be better to attract more gamers. At least that's what we are hoping, especially since we live only 20 minutes from the casino.

As for Argosy there are some full pay (8/5) Bonus games at the dollar level, 3 and 5 play. They are located in multi-game, multi-denomination machines in the VP area -- labeled 'USA', I think.

Folks...

I was at the Argosy just this past weekend and I was not able to find the $ 3-play JOB ANYWHERE. I am NOT saying they are gone; I am just saying that I couldn't find them. I almost never play at the Argosy because of the laughable pay tables. I check out the place about every six months HOPING that something has changed, but it never does. One high-roller area (the one that is around to the left as you enter the casino) was not even there. Only the high-roller area in the "little room" off of the main casino exists and (like I said), I couldn't find ANY 9/6 JOB.

Additionally, I FULLY agree with Austin's assessment of Harrah's; they have no desire to offer any half-way decent VP. Why should they? They still have uneducated players playing.

Ameristar... My host told me that MY two favorite machines (quarter, five-play, NSUD) have been removed. Yes, those machines have been there for about 2-3 years labeled as nickel machines. A discussion with the Slot Superintendent confirms this and she indicated they are NOT coming back. Alas and alack.

Folks...

In addition, the Hollywood is being managed by the same group that manages the Argosy. If the Argosy has bad VP, why would you expect any better pay tables at the Hollywood Casino; except for the fact that they might be "loose" initially to attract players.

It has been a couple months since we have been in Argosy, we are now hunkered down in Sam's Town RV park in Las Vegas (plenty of full pay here). The dollar 3/5-play (they are 8/5 Bonus, not JoB) were still there on our last visit but they may be gone by now. I don't play them too much, $15 to $25 per bet is a little rich for my bankroll. However they can be difficult to find, they are buried in machines with lots of other games. The machines are labeled "USA" or "All Star" or something like that. They get played mostly for the 5 cent games.

Sorry to hear about the 5-play in Ameristar. You are talking about the two side by side on the back wall past the VP area? They also had 9/6 JoB and 8/5 Bonus. Not surprised to hear them gone, was surprised to find them still there for this long.

The only thing even remotely playable in Harrah's were some 9/5 JoB in 25 cent 5-play. We play them every few months just to keep our Harrah's points active. On our last visit all those but two had been removed.

Since we won't be back in Kansas for a few weeks, I would be greatly interested in what you find in the new Hollywood if you go.

Rick...

Personally, it will be a few weeks before my wife and I go to the Hollywood casino. We just want to let the initial dust and crowds settle down. I will be sure to put something up, but I am also sure that others will be reporting sooner than me.

significantly beginning in the Summer of 2010 as Ameristar moved multipliers
for slots only. Nearly all slot machines
are marked as 2x, 3x, 4x points every day in addition to your card level. Previous to the Summer of 2010, mystery
multipliers and emailed multipliers were available to all players. Additionally, drawings open to all players
have been eliminated. There are a number
of dollar progressives that could become positive once the jackpot has reached
  the 8-10k range.

Does anyone have thoughts on the state of KC video poker
  today?
