Does somebody know if there are sportsbooks in other gaming juristrictions
around the country, besides Nevada? I know there aren't any in Tunica, Ms. and
I think there aren't any in Atlantic City.
If there aren't any others, why is that? They seem pretty popular in Vegas.

I actually don't know of any Vegas-style sportsbook outside Nevada.
The only thing you might see is something that looks like a horrible-
odds parlay card run by a state lottery, such as Oregon has.
The main reason is that the powers that be (in their infinite
wisdom) seem to think that the chances of a sporting event result
being "fixed" would increase dramatically if there was a casino
sportsbook in or near the city where such an event would be held. Of
course, this ignores the existence of tens of thousands of illegal
bookies in these cities, as well as the fact that geographical
proximity to a betting venue is largely irrelevant (for instance,
the 1919 Black Sox scandal operated across distances of hundreds of
miles).
It is because of this fear that Las Vegas has never had a major
professional sports team, despite the fact that it is a TREMENDOUS
market for sports (because of the county demographic; NOT because
gambling is allowed), and several smaller cities have pro sports
franchises. Even baseball would be possible with a domed stadium
(and if there's a pro ball team in Phoenix, which is hotter than
Vegas, no one should be bitching about the summer weather in Vegas).
I consider this phobia particularly ludicrous when I watch games
such as last Monday Night Football between the Green Bay Packers and
the St. Louis Rams: with two minutes to go, Green Bay had the ball
on the St. Louis 45, fourth-and-1. Green Bay led by a score of 31-
17, and St. Louis had ONE timeout left. Green Bay made the utterly
ludicrous decision to GO FOR IT, and scored a touchdown(!) on the
next play. This despite the fact that virtually the only way for
Green Bay to lose the game was to go for it, get stopped, turn the
ball over, and give up a quick touchdown (followed by a recovered
onside kick, etc.) If they had punted there would have been no way
on EARTH St. Louis could have come back to tie.
The whole thing becomes clear when you consider that the line was
Green Bay -7 and the total 51. The fact that you see this sort of
crap all the time in the NFL ("OK, boys, let's go out there and beat
that spread!") leads me to conclude that ILLEGAL sports action is
what has the corrupting influence, NOT legal Nevada sportsbooks.

I believe there is a Federal Law allowing only Nevada to have
sportsbooks. Atlantic City will be trying to change that with sports
betting on only on pro- sports,however, they don't have any sports
betting to date.

There is a sportsbook at the Coeur d'Alene Indian Casino in Worley,
Idaho (any sport I believe). The state of Washington has many state
licensed off-track betting businesses where you can go and place a
bet (horse racing only I believe, but not sure).
