... We spent a weekend there recently and found very little worthy of
comment. Which will not stop me from commenting anyway (mostly
because comps are so easy to come by there). Many tower rooms have
been updated (from a little worn, a little shabby to not bad at all).
The Cabo Mexican restaurant that replaced the Guadalajara is nicely
done, but the salsa bar is gone, and the cheapo (Kwik-Mart slushy
machine) margaritas have been upgraded to top shelf concoctions made
with really good (and really expensive)tequila. The Cabo's bar is
much nicer than its predecessor, but now the BP progressive is 7/5
vs. the 8/5 BP progressives found at other Palace Station bars.
(Gotta pay for all those new plasma TVs I guess).
The Optimum play machines were available at all hours of the day and
night. TDW, gone for awhile, is back --- not too far away from where
it used to be, near the Trackside bar.
First place in the "what a bad bet/what a nice hand" category for
this trip went to my wife. She can distinguish good pay tables from
bad, but she ignores math whenever a "special" feeling comes over
her. (Generally Long Island Iced Tea inspires these flashes of
intuition). She saw a bank of of Double Royal (quarter) machines
(base game 7/5 DDB --- ouch)with a 4 Aces/kicker progressive @ $550.
So she took a shot. She didn't hit the Aces, but she did draw 3 to a
$2031 Royal. Her gloating ("How do you like my bad bet now?")made it
difficult to fully enjoy her good fortune.
We visited downtown for the first time in years and kinda liked it.
Found the decent plays listed in the data base at the Four Queens
(those penny/nickel 50 and 100 play machines also have the 99.3%
version of KBJW, by the way). Went retro with Pick'em and Treasure
Chest at the Fremont. Overall, a nice trip. And we got out of town
without running into OJ.
